Installing and Playing
----------------------
Put the file map-mercado.pk3 in your baseq3 directory. Currently there is no good way to add new maps to your in-game menus. If id ever fixes that, I will update this file accordingly. Until then, you will need to start the maps from the console. Hit the tilde (~) key to pull down the console and type:

map mercado-dm (for classic deathmatch)

or

map mercado-arena (for tournament or rocket arena style play)

You will also need to set a fraglimit. For example, type this at the console:

fraglimit 30

Once the map has started you can add bots and set the difficulty level from the in-game menus.

Extended Description
--------------------
There are two maps included in this pack, mercado-dm and mercado-arena. The maps use identical geometry; the difference is in the item placement.

In mercado-dm there are sufficient weapons, ammo, etc. to support 2 - 6 players. I prefer 3 or 4 players; although as many as 6 or 8 is possible.

In mercado-arena all of the items but the quad, the megahealth, and the red armor have been removed, however you are given gold armor, a grenade launcher, a plasma gun, a rocket launcher, and one box of ammo for each weapon whenever you respawn. You can turn this into a "rocket arena" style map by playing it in tournament mode and setting the fraglimit to 1.

Since this map started life as a Quake map, it uses "air shafts" rather than the usual Quake III style bounce pads. Functionally they are the same, only the appearance is different. I add this note only for those few people who might be playing Quake III but never played Quake, and consequently might not understand why the shafts are there or why they don't look like bounce pads.

Author's Notes
--------------
I originally designed this map for Quake in the fall of 1998. It never made it past the beta stage because the Quake engine just couldn't handle it. It proved to be very laggy despite its small size, due to the fact that the entire level is visible from any point in the map. The Quake II version was somewhat less laggy, but really not much fun, and so it too remains unpublished. Thankfully Quake III has remedied all of this--the current version can handle up to 6 people with no apparent lag, and as for fun, well, I think it is the most brutal map I have ever played.

The name of this map is Spanish for "The Marketplace of Death" and is so-called because the geometry reminds me (very vaguely) of an open marketplace that I visited many years ago in Ciudad de Juarez, Mexico. Well okay, nobody had rocket launchers there, but one guy did try to sell me a switchblade!
