"Cleaner", an employee at Ion Storm was looking through some Quake 1 development CD's at Ion Storm's offices and discovers a map titled DM7 on one of the CD's. Read what happens next in his own words............

"Here at Ion Storm I have access to all the original iD maps. On this CD was a map called DM7, being the curious bastard I am I tried to load it. The original map was screwed up (some type of texture problem). I fixed that texture and began to play with it and revise it a little, more to my liking for a deathmatch map. What came out was Acrophobia - DM7. So for the most part it is an one of the original Quake deathmatch levels."

Jon_Rambo[HPB] uploads Acrophobia - DM7, an improved version of DM7 to File Planet:

In his own words:

"This is DM7, I downloaded it from 158.143.100.69:27500. I know people are having trouble downloading it from there and I'm sure the server is getting worked pretty hard. So I uploaded it here."

Approximately 250 people download the map directly and countless others from various Quake Servers and Web Sites from 8/24/97 to Present.

Many people release conversions of DM7 for both Quake 1 and 2. Many people consider this map, although "unofficial", one of their favorite and most memorable maps for deathmatch.

Received E-Mail from Cleaner( cleaner@thirdlaw.com ) at Third Law about DM7. The E-Mail's contents:

Yes I indeed have something to do with Acrophobia.

Here is the history as I know it and how I am involved in it.
One day at Ion, I was looking through the development stuff for Quake 1
and came across a map called DM7. I was very curious since I had never
heard of a DM7. There wasn't a compiled version of it, so I compiled it and found a map that was about 75% done. The major elements were in such as the Wind Tunnel, The center Room, and The Quad, but pretty much nothing else. I asked John Romero about the map and he told me that it was one that American Mcgee had started but never finished. I had a little free time on my hands and decided to finish out the map. I finished the inside of the center building and most of the walkways around the sides and added the rest of the weapons and armor. At this time it still did not have a name, it was just DM7. Tom Hall, being the master of words that he is came up with Acrophobia. I sent it to American to see what he thought and wondered if we could release it. He thought it was pretty cool, but asked that I do not release it. My understanding was that he was using it for a starting point to a Quake 2 map. Which was fine with me. So I put it aside and we just played it in the office. There were still a number of problems with the map, mainly rspeeds and a vis problem at the top of the map. Also I thought some of the item locations need to be refined. About this time was QuakeCon 97. Romero liked playing the map and decided without anyone's permission to give it out at QuakeCon and then out on the Net. It kind of pissed me off that it could be put out at that time, with the small problems it had and without American's permission, but there was not much I could do about it. I am glad that at least I am part of a map that has a history about it. =)

Interestingly there was a DM8 also, it was a military style dm
map started by Romero. But it was not much to really work with.

	                                        Hope that helps,
	                                                        Cleaner

Asked Cleaner what he thought about "The History of Acrophobia - DM7" so far and he sent the following E-Mail in response:

Glad I could help - my real name is David Namaksy. I am glad you like
it. I will check out your version for Quake 3. Any way you want to
write it up is ok with me, just make sure you mention that American started the base map.

                                                                Cleaner

That Bastard releases the FINAL version of Acrophobia for Q3A in the midst of MUCH controversy concerning map converting. On that note, this will be my next to last map conversion as I don't desire to be sued by id Software for copyright infringement. Look for q2dm7 - The Slimy Place which will also be released today. After that, I will be working on original maps ONLY to comply with id's restrictions that I am sure will take the fun out of mapping for a lot of people.
