Instructions for modification of Normal Skin - (based for Windows 95/98 only)

1) Using Winzip (or similar) extract the yourskin.pk3 file in your quake3/baseq3 directory -
   i.e. C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\baseq3\

2) Find the newly placed yourskin.pk3 and attempt to open it. By default Windows does not
know what to use and so brings up the 'Open With ...' dialog box.

3) Scroll down the programs and find the Winzip program you use. !IMPORTANT! Make sure the
'Always use this program' check box is NOT ticked.

4) The Program loads yourskin.pk3 and 18 files should be shown (or one folder - Keep opening
the folders until you find the files. DO NOT EXTRACT ANYTHING)

5) Firstly open the file named icon_player.tga. This file is the square, face picture seen of the character when loading games
or in the Model Selection Area. This will load using your default Paint Program associated
with .tga files. Using your paint program aquire a picture of yourself (through scanning/digital
camera etc.). Now resize the picture to around 55x60 pixels - make sure that you don't distort the face!
Now (if possible) use a point to point selection tool or if that is not available then just select your face
by dragging a rectangle over it. YOU ONLY NEED YOUR FACE - FROM THE CHIN TO MIDDLE FOREHEAD -no ears or hair!
Once you've selected your face, simply 'copy and paste' it into the icon_player.tga file - placing it over the place
over the cross. ! N.B. Anything over the white outline will NOT be shown on the screen ! Finish it off by 'touching up'
areas - the pose is supposed to be of the character (and his neck and shirt) looking towards you (see Bitterman).

6) When your happy save icon_player.tga and close it. Going back to Winzip again, open up h_player.tga and repeat the process
of 'putting your head on'. This file is the characters head as it appears in game. If it is possible, once your
head has been pasted onto the blck circle, try and use a 'Blend' tool to merge the different skin tones.

8) Once happy save the file and go back to Winzip. Finally open player.tga; This file contains the 'skin'
for the body (torso - legs -arms etc). You needn't do anything with this unless you want
to, so for the mean-time, leave it.

9) That's it - anythng past this is optional - load up Q3A and go and select the model.

!!! Please remember that the images must remain as .tga files and the .pk3 file must remain in your
baseq3 folder in order to work. The .pk3 file must not be extracted in their - and the
folder structure must remain absolutly unchanged !!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extra 1 - to get your name displayed as the models name, simply rename the image files containing
the word 'name' - replacing 'name' with your prefered name: but -

1 - THE NAME MUST BE IN LOWER CASE!
2 - The image MUST remain a .tga file. and the 'h_' or 'icon_' part of the title MUST be kept.

Now simply rename the '.skin' files present in the directory, again replacing 'name' with your name,
the 'lower' and other parts must remain their in the same porsition (i.e. lower_ben.skin)
Finally open up each individual '.skin' file. By default Windows does not know what to use and so brings
up the 'Open With ...' dialog box. Select Wordpad or Notepad etc, but make the 'Always use this program'
check box is NOT ticked. Once open change the very end file, to the name you replaced it
with - again in lower case. For example if you are using 'ben' as your name -

	  tag_head,
          h_head,models/players/bitterman/h_player.tga

		       ... then becomes ...

  	  tag_head,
	  h_head,models/players/bitterman/h_ben.tga

!!! Do not change the files containing red or blue in their names, and do not rename them either !!!
Once you've done this your done.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Extra 2 - to change the faces used on the CTF skins (recommended), simply repeat steps 1 to 9 for the following files

h_red.tga - This is the Red CTF face placed onto the model in-game
h_blue.tga - This is the Blue CTF face placed onto the model in-game

icon_red.tga - This is the 2D Red CTF face seen in the options screen, or when loading a game
icon_blue.tga - This is the 2D Blue CTF face seen in the options screen, or when loading a game

!!! N.B. The CTF icons have different 'cut off points' to the original, so remember that anything past
the white outer line will NOT be shown. Also it is worth applying a red or blue colour to the skins,
so that you can tell them apart - the 'body skins' have already got their colours !!!

The following files can be left alone -

red.tga (The red CTF 'body skin')
blue.tga (The blue CTF 'body skin')

========================================================================

!!! IMPORTANT ONLINE NOTE - To view your skins online (or on a LAN etc) YOU must host the server. That way when
people join, they will automatically download your skins and then will be able to view them. Just connecting
to a host who doesn't have your skin, will revert you back to the default 'Sarge' skin and model. This isn't
my fault - as everyone has to suffer this - OFFLINE/SINGLE PLAYER BOT GAMES ARE NOT AFFECTED, you will see
your own skin then !!!
