Aliens and Alien Operations
@Alien Freighter Convoy
This mysterious message fragment shows
what is apparently a fleet of alien
freighters flying directly into a
black hole. It is unclear what the
freighters are carrying, and even more
nebulous why the freighters would
willingly enter a black hole.
Although it is possible that this is
some sort of waste disposal operation,
Galactic Science Corps scientists think
this is unlikely. The best way to find
out what is happening is to intercept
any alien freighter convoys that
exhibit unusual or aberrant behavior.
If we can succeed in destroying or
capturing one of these convoys,
GSC scientists might be able to shed
some light on the aliens'
mysterious activity.
@Alien Military Build-Up
Whatever operation the aliens are
undertaking is evidently of great
military importance. This message
shows a major military build-up in
a black hole system -- apparently the
same one seen in the first transmission
we intercepted. It is imperative that
we attempt to learn more about this
situation. Interception of alien
freighters, especially those that exhibit
any unusual characteristics, should be
one of your top priorities at this point.
In the meantime, GSC's alien language
experts are attempting to decode the
audio portions of the alien messages.
@Alien Supply List
"...torpedo...plasma cannon...doomsday project...out"

Thanks to the Galactic Science Corps,
we now have a partial translation
algorithm for decoding the alien voice
transmissions. The latest message appears
to be a request for supplies, most of
which are weapons and weapon-related
equipment. Apparently, the aliens are
in the process of constructing some
sort of offensive weapon, presumably
to use against X-COM. Most disturbing
are the inclusion of the word "Doomsday"
toward the end of the message.
The GSC will continue to examine this
and the previous messages for clues as
to what the aliens are planning.
@Doomsday is Nigh
"...is unacceptable...any other attacks
 does not concern me...is falling behind
 ...disruption shipment...at your place
 commander...are irrelevant...I do not
 wish to travel...myself, but I will if
 you continue at that substandard level,
 and I promise you I will have your...
 if I am forced to do such an..."

The Galactic Science Corps is now capable
of translating most of the aliens'
language -- and not a moment too soon.
Apparently, the aliens are in the late
stages of the construction of some sort
of weapon. Your interception of alien
freighters and tugs has evidently
disrupted the aliens' schedule, and you
must continue to disrupt their lines of
supply until GSC scientist can determine
where the aliens are building their device.
Hopefully, in the process, you can uncover
further components and information that
will allow X-COM to take a more proactive
approach to this situation.
@The Doomsday Attack Plan
The most recent alien message has
confirmed our worst fears. The aliens
have constructed a massive Doomsday Weapon
that they intend to use against Earth.
Time is short, and it is important that
you act as soon as possible to prevent
this device from being completed and
launched! The map fragment embedded in
the message reveals the general location
of the black hole that acts as an entrance
to the aliens' dimension. Once you locate
this region of space, you must act quickly
to build up an attack force for the final
attack on the Doomsday Weapon.
No weaponry, alien or human, can damage
an object so large. Therefore, the GSC
has recommended the use of the Nova Bomb
as possible means of destroying the
Doomsday Weapon and sealing the alien
universe forever. Therefore, your final
assault force must include at least one
Super Avenger interceptor equipped
with a Nova Bomb.
The 'MacArthur' - a 'Patton'-class
vessel equipped with the new Dimension
Jump Drive - will carry up to five ships
through the black hole and into the alien
universe. When you are ready to launch your
assault, signal for the 'MacArthur' through
the normal mission launch sequence. Good luck.
@Alien Structural Component
The object retrieved from the freighter
convoy is likely related to the alien
message we recently received. It appears
to be a structural component for an
immense space station or similar complex.
Speculation as to this component's use --
and why the aliens would be towing these
components through deep space -- is
pointless without additional information.
Be on the lookout for any alien freighter
convoys that display unusual
characteristics, and make sure that all
alien transmissions you receive are
examined as soon as possible.
@Alien Drive Component
This is another piece of alien cargo
that seems connected with the aliens'
secret project, now referred to as
"Doomsday" by GSC scientists. This new
component appears to be part of a
massive star drive system -- similar to
the hyperdrive propulsion systems used
by alien fighters, but on a much larger
scale. Scientists now suspect that the
object the aliens are constructing is
not for use here in the Frontier --
rather, it is meant to be deployed in a
distant location.
@Alien Weapon Component
It seems that numerous alien convoys
have started transporting this massive
component. Even after detailed
examination, the its full function cannot
be fathomed; however, many of the parts
that make up this component are devices
and materials that have come to be
associated with alien weaponry.
Galactic Science Corps scientists can
only speculate what type of weapon could
be built using components of this magnitude.
@Aereons
Aereons are a breed of alien never
before encountered by X-COM. They appear
to be a race of genetically engineered
cyborgs. Hundreds of cybernetic implants
suffuse the organic portion of their
bodies and terminate in external
connectors that link directly to
built-in interface ports in the cockpits
of alien fighters. The result of this
marriage of biology and computer
technology is that the Aereon's piloting
abilities and response times are far
superior to those of even the best
non-Aereon pilot. Although their
cybernetic implants are obviously their
main strength, the Aereons mental and
physical capabilities are also better
than those of most other alien pilots.
They are, by far, the most formidable
and dangerous opponents X-COM pilots
face in a dogfight situation.
The one redeeming feature of these
dangerous aliens is that they do not
appear to possess inordinately high
psionic abilities.
@Ethereal
Ever since they were encountered in
the First Alien War, the mere sight
of an Ethereal has struck fear into
the hearts -- and minds -- of X-COM
agents. Now, after nearly a century,
we have once again come face to face
with this formidable nemesis. When
X-COM scientists first studied this
species, it was clear that this
creature was not engineered for
planet-bound warfare. Now it is
obvious what job the Ethereals were
designed for; as pilots they are
extremely adept, and their weapon
and targeting skills are better
than average. They are also fairly
aggressive in their attacks in
most situations. The biggest
danger, however, is that the
Ethereals' psionic capabilities are
extremely high, and they are often able
to use this ability to panic or gain
control of X-COM pilots. This makes
Ethereals very dangerous, especially to
pilots with low psionic capabilities.
@Muton
The Muton race is familiar to X-COM as
one of the most feared aliens from the
First Alien War. As foot soldiers,
Mutons were relentless and nearly
impervious to most forms of weaponry.
Muton pilots operating in the Frontier,
although slightly different than the
original specimens encountered, are
essentially identical to those who
plagued Earth nearly a century ago.
The primary difference in this strain
is heightened mental capacity, probably
a necessary adaptation to allow Mutons to
operate high-tech spacecraft.
Despite this, Mutons are not nearly as
formidable in the skies as they were on
the ground. As pilots, they are average at
best. They also lack all but the most basic
psionic defensive abilities, and are unable
to use psionic weaponry.
@Psilord
The Psilord is an abomination that has
obviously been developed primarily for its
mental capacity. This genetically engineered
creature has psionic abilities that far
exceed those of any alien species encountered
to date. Unlike other alien species,
Psilords tend to remain out of the main
battle if they possibly can. They use their
psionic abilities to bolster the fighting
skills of all the other alien pilots in
the battle. Whenever a Psilord is present at
a battle, all alien pilots exhibit heightened
prowess in both flying and weapon skills.
In addition, Psilords seem to increase the
alien pilots' ability to fight as a
unified group. Although they seldom enter the
fray of their own accord, Psilords are
nevertheless formidable dogfight opponents,
and downright deadly when their ships are
equipped with psionic weaponry.
@Sectoid
Of all the alien species encountered, the
Sectoids are perhaps the most familiar.
Reports of Sectoid sightings pre-date the
first alien war, with documented encounters
as early as 1948. Sectoid pilots in the
Frontier are identical to Sectoids captured
and studied during the First Alien War.
As pilots, they use both their highly
developed mental capacity and their
superior psionic skills to good advantage,
though their flying and marksmanship are
strictly average.
Alien Ships and Installations
@Wraith Type 1 Saucer
Detailed examination of the hull and
internal systems of the Wraith saucer has
provided a great deal of information on
the composition and operational capabilities
of the latest generation of alien craft.
The Wraith's weapons payload capacity is
only slightly better than that of the X-1A
Lightning II interceptor, but the "Wraith"
is lighter, more agile, and capable of
withstanding significantly more damage than
its X-COM counterpart.
@Spectre Type 2 Saucer
The Spectre saucer represents a much greater
threat than the smaller Wraith. Designed as
a multi-purpose craft, the Spectre is equally
good at dogfighting and attacking medium to
heavy slow or stationary targets. This vessel's
weapons and defensive capacity is superior to
that of the Wraith, and comparable to that of
the X-COM S-2 Firestar. Examination of this ship
has opened a number of new avenues of research.
@Phantasm Type 3 Saucer
The Phantasm significantly out-guns any X-COM
vessel, especially when it comes to beam weapons,
thus making it a very serious threat.
The role of this ship is primarily offensive --
most notably, it is frequently the vanguard of
attacks against X-COM bases and Outposts.
Although much of the technology used in this vessel
can also be found in other alien vessel classes,
there are several features unique to the Phantasm
that could lead to advances in shielding, drive,
and targeting systems.
@Shade Fighter
The Shade is a deadly departure from the standard
saucer-based alien ship design. It is a fast and
highly maneuverable ship that is armed to the teeth
with all the latest alien weaponry. The Shade also
employs new shielding technology unlike that
found on any other type of alien vessel.
Exclusively operated by Aereon pilots,
Shades pose a significant threat in dogfight
situations.
@Spirit Alien Freighter
The aliens' fleet of interstellar freighters is
the lifeline of their economy. It seems that the
aliens depend on their freighters just as X-COM does.
This means that successful strikes against
these ships can have a significant effect on
the alien infrastructure. Aside from their
outward appearance, the Spirit freighters are
very similar to their X-COM counterparts.
The major differences are a larger cargo capacity
and slightly better hull integrity.
@Alien Drone
Alien Drones are tiny unmanned fighter craft that
are often deployed by alien freighters as a
defensive measure. Each Drone has its own guidance,
propulsion, and weapons system. Once launched,
Drones engage the nearest threatening target.
In addition to their own internal control systems,
each Drone is equipped with a small psionic receiver
that allows the pilot that launched the Drones
to control them. Once the launching vessel is
destroyed, all Drones controlled by that ship's
pilot switch over to independent operation.
Once operating on their own, Drones are much
less of a threat.
@Alien Outpost
Alien outposts are the backbone of all alien
operations in the Frontier, accumulating raw
materials and processing them into equipment
and weapons for the alien war effort.
These facilities are well-shielded.
They possess no offensive weaponry, but are
usually guarded by fighter squadrons.
If we understand the alien's infrastructure
correctly, the destruction of alien outposts
could potentially place a major strain on the
aliens' ability to effectively carry out their
day-to-day activities.
@Alien Mining Platform
Alien mining platforms fulfill the same function
as X-COM Ore Processing Plants. They possess
minimal defensive capability, but are usually
guarded by one or more fighter craft.
While the loss of a mining platform is not as
economically devastating as the loss of an
outpost, mining platforms remain a viable
target when attempting to slow alien production
capabilities.
@Harbinger Alien Tug
The aliens employ this craft when they are
transporting cargo that is too big to fit in
their 'Spirit' freighters. The 'Harbinger' tug
is equipped with a powerful, aft-mounted tractor
beam which it uses to drag its payload
through space. When in use, the tractor
beam's power cells cause powerful hyperwave
emissions that can be detected from vast distances.
The tug is only lightly armed, but its weapons
are specially tuned to damage only the shields
and engines of target craft. If the Harbinger
manages to disable an enemy, it attempts to
capture the hapless victim using its tractor beam.
The tugs themselves are not much of a
combat concern; however, the cargo ferried by
these craft is of great interest to GSC scientists.
Alien Base Components
@Central Pod
Like X-COM bases, alien bases seem to use a
modular construction design. All of the modules,
or "pods", on an alien base are attached either
to the huge central hub or to one of the dangling
"tendrils" attached to it. Destruction of the hub
ensures the destruction of the entire base.
@Hangar Pods
Analogous to the Hangar Modules on X-COM bases,
each alien Hangar Pod houses up to three ships
and the equipment needed to maintain them.
Destruction of a Hangar Pod means the destruction
of any ships inside the pod, and it leaves those
ships currently in flight which are normally
housed in that facility with no place to land
and refuel.
@Hibernation Pods
Whereas X-COM pilots are housed in relative luxury
on their home bases, scans show that the aliens
keep their pilots in suspended animation until
needed. Each alien Hibernation Pod houses up to
five pilots. Destruction of a Hibernation Pod kills
all the alien beings housed therein.
@Cargo Pod
Like X-COM bases, alien bases have modular cargo
storage areas that house all the equipment and
supplies needed for base and ship operations.
Destruction of a Cargo Pod destroys all weapons
and equipment inside the pod and reduces the
cargo capacity of the alien base.
@Probe Launcher
Like X-COM, the aliens appear to rely heavily on
the information obtained from sensor probes.
They also launch probes for a wide variety of
other purposes. The destruction of an alien
base's Probe Launchers inhibits the aliens'
exploration abilities and prevents them from
launching probes that might interfere with
X-COM operations.
@Data Receptor
Aliens share their tactical and engineering data
through a link to some sort of information web.
This is not unlike the Downlink data system used
by X-COM. This appears to be the most basic alien
download device. Destruction of Data Receptors
should slow the aliens' development of technology.
@High-Speed Data Receptor
This is an upgraded version of the basic Data
Receptor used by the aliens to increase their
technology base. Scans show that this version
is capable of much faster data transfer than
its predecessor.
@Advanced Data Receptor
This is the ultimate version of the aliens'
Data Receptor technology we have yet discovered.
GSC scientists confirm that it is capable of
significantly faster uploads and downloads than
the High-Speed Data Receptor.
@Electroplasmic Shield Pod
This alien shield generator is capable of
producing a defensive field of the type
generated by some of the less-powerful alien
spacecraft. This is the most basic form of shield
technology used by the aliens. Destruction of the
Shield Pod leaves the base vulnerable to attack.
@Trans-Dimensional Shield Pod
Using a technology far superior to that of the
Electroplasmic Shield Pod, the Trans-Dimensional
version produces a much more powerful defensive
field.
@Sensor Pod
The Sensor Pod is the most basic type of
sensor/tracking system installed on alien bases.
Based on the technology used in alien spacecraft
sensors, this system is a great deal more powerful
and accurate than basic X-COM base sensor systems.
Destruction of an alien base's sensor pod should
greatly reduce its targeting capability and
weapons accuracy.
@Advanced Sensor Pod
The ultimate in alien detection technology,
the Advanced Sensor Pod is capable of targeting
and controlling every type of weapon they are
known to possess. This system uses the same
technology as the most advanced sensor/tracking
systems installed in alien spacecraft.
@ECM Projector
This alien electromagnetic countermeasures (ECM)
system has the potential to jam all X-COM missiles
within a one kilometer range of an alien base.
Destruction of a base's ECM projectors makes
combat near the base much easier, and makes
attacks on the base itself more effective.
@Advanced ECM Projector
Essentially a higher-powered version of the basic
alien ECM Projector, the advanced version has
twice the range and is generally more effective
than its predecessor.
@Programming Pod
Alien pilots undergo a very detailed, very
thorough learning ritual - but one that uses
far different methods than X-COM training.
Instead of mental and physical schooling, the
aliens are genetically programmed with their
skills. Each Programming Pod can "train" five
pilots simultaneously. Destruction of a Programming
Pod kills any aliens currently inside.
@Repair Pod
All alien base systems appear to be self-repairing.
Nevertheless, some bases seem to enhance their
self-repair capabilities through the use of
Repair Pods. Scans show that these modules contain
a number of computer sub-systems that dramatically
increase the speed at which base systems repair
themselves. Destruction of a base's Repair Pod
should make attacks against the base much more
effective.
@Missile Pod
Alien bases use defensive systems very similar to
those used on X-COM bases. Missile Pods are capable
of firing nearly any type of missile the aliens
are known to possess. In a base attack scenario,
it is recommended that you destroy as many
offensive turrets as possible before attempting
to attack other base targets.
@Beam Pod
Beam Pods provide alien bases with a powerful and
reliable means of defense. Capable of using a wide
variety of beam weapons, Beam Pods, in sufficient
numbers, can make attacking an alien base very
difficult indeed. In a base attack scenario,
it is recommended that you destroy as many
offensive turrets as possible before attempting
to attack other base targets.
@Communicator Pod
Communicator Pods are used by the aliens to send
orders to fighter squadrons assigned to each base.
The destruction of a base's Communicator Pod has
the potential to greatly reduce the effectiveness
of alien fighter operations.
@Tractor Pod
Alien Tractor Pods are capable of projecting
tractor beams with greater range and power than
ship-mounted tractor beam generators.
Probes and Mines
@Sensor Probe
Sensor Probes are designed to be a low-cost
alternative to sending ships out to explore
unknown areas of space. Each probe is equipped
with the best type of sensor equipment currently
available. The modular design of the unit allows
it to be upgraded with the advent of new
technology. The detection range and total cost
of each probe is dependent on the type of
sensors carried. The travel range of the probe
is limited to approximately .75 light years from
its point of origin, and its operational life is
limited to 4-6 weeks.
Cost: $65,000
Size: 10 CSU(s)
@Hunter Probe
Understanding of the compact Vector Control
Thrusters used by alien craft has allowed GSC
scientists to design an updated version of the
Sensor Probes currently in use by X-COM.
Like Sensor Probes, Hunter Probes are equipped
with the most up-to-date sensor equipment available.
They differ from Sensor Probes in that they use
their thrusters to move through space on a
preset course centered on their destination
coordinates. This allows them to cover a much wider
range of territory than standard Sensor Probes.
These roving probes should aid greatly in the
tracking of alien movements, as well as the
discovery of alien outposts and bases.
The one drawback is that their functional life
span is slightly shorter than that of a Sensor Probe.
Like other probes, the maximum travel range for
the Hunter Probe is .75 light years from its
point of origin.
Cost: $85,000
Size: 25 CSU(s)
@Data Jammer Probe (Alien)
Evidently, the aliens have determined the methods
by which we accumulate our research data.
This alien probe is designed to set up a
electrostatic dampening field that prevents
data reception over normal and hyper-dimensional
channels. Luckily, the field generated by the probe
is very localized, and is capable of affecting
only one Downlink at a time. Although Marsec
engineers can find no method of constructing a
duplicate probe for X-COM use or developing
countermeasures to prevent the probe's effects,
the energy signature of the device is now known,
and all sensor systems have been modified to
immediately detect its presence.
@Sensor Probe (Alien)
Rather than risk their expensive fighters for
exploration purposes, the aliens make use of
long-range sensor probes to map star systems and
pinpoint the locations of X-COM bases and other
human installations. Thanks to the close-range
reconnaissance of one of these probes in a
combat situation, all X-COM sensor systems are
now tuned to identify alien Sensor Probes that
enter scanning range. It is in X-COM's interests
to eliminate these probes as soon as they
are detected.
@Alien Explosive Mine
Alien Explosive Mines are similar in function
to the naval mines used on 20th century Earth.
Once an enemy ship enters the mine's detection
range, the mine detonates with a powerful
Elerium/Cobalt nuclear explosion. Detailed analysis
of this object has allowed The GSC to modify
the sensors of X-COM craft to identify Alien
Explosive Mines in battle.
@Alien Beam Mine
Arguably the most versatile and effective mine in
the alien arsenal, an Alien Beam Mine is capable
of utilizing a wide variety of beam weapons.
The weapons are targeted by a miniature version of
the targeting systems used by fighter craft,
and the mine's self contained power source can
power its weapons almost indefinitely.
Although sensors cannot detect the type of weapon
carried by the mines, ship detection systems have
now been modified to identify Alien Beam Mines
when encountered.
@Alien Missile Mine
Alien Missile Mines use miniature versions of the
targeting sensors found in fighter craft to
actively scan for enemy targets.
Once a target is acquired, the mine fires a
missile from its payload and begins scanning for
another target. Versatile and deadly, Alien
Missile Mines are capable of firing virtually
any type of missile the aliens possess.
Another deadly twist is that, once their missile
payload is depleted, Alien Missile Mines turn
into explosive mines which explode when an enemy
ship wanders too close. X-COM ship sensors have
now been tuned to identify Alien Missile Mines
in combat.
Mission Briefings
@Engage Rogue Freighter
You are about to engage the armed freighter hijacked
by the Cult of Sirius. This freighter and its
attendant fighter craft must be stopped at all
costs before they can inflict any more damage on
X-COM and civilian facilities in the Frontier.
If allowed to escape, the result will certainly
be more loss of life and continued impact on
X-COM funding from Earth corporations.
@Attack Pirate Base
You are about to engage the home base of the
Kabron pirates operating in the Frontier.
Although a Kabron base is not nearly as
dangerous as an X-COM facility, it is nevertheless
quite well-armed and heavily-shielded. Extreme
caution is advised. If you succeed in this
mission, it is likely that all pirate activity
in the Frontier will finally cease once and for all.
@Defend Pirate Base From Alien Attack
The Kabron pirates have been an almost constant
distraction ever since humans began colonizing
other worlds. They are ruthless and cunning -
but they are also honorable. If you are successful
in defending the Kabron base, there should be no
further trouble with the pirates for the duration
of the current alien crisis. This possibility is
enough of an incentive to make the rescue attempt
worthwhile. Good luck.
@Prevent the Capture of the Nova Bomb Prototype
The freighter containing the Nova Bomb prototype
is under heavy attack by pirate interceptors.
Should the pirates succeed in capturing the freighter,
they will surely attempt to tow it out of the
system. This must be prevented at all costs.
Prevent the capture of the GSC freighter by any
means possible.
@Destroy the Arms Dealer's Base
The base you are about to engage has been
positively identified as that of Idnarb Trebor.
A scattering field is preventing our scans from
identifying the weapons and defenses of the station.
We also don't know what escort craft might be
present for backup defense. At any rate,
Trebor is an arms dealer, so it's a good bet he
is armed to the teeth. Remain alert and be ready
for almost any contingency.
@X-COM Base Defense
An alien attack force has engaged an X-COM base.
The loss of this base would significantly decrease
our ability to effectively protect Frontier
installations. Use any means necessary to
neutralize the attackers before they can damage or
destroy the base. There are some reports that the
aliens may be using new fighter technology.
Although the safety of the base is your primary
concern, the capture of any new alien spacecraft
would be a great aid to our ongoing research efforts.
@Defense of the only X-COM Base
An alien squadron has launched an attack against
our only base in the Frontier! If this base is
destroyed, all hope of defeating the aliens is lost.
Use any means necessary to prevent the aliens from
damaging or destroying the base.
@Defend Corporate Outpost
An alien squadron has engaged a corporate Outpost.
The loss of this facility will result in an
immediate loss of funding and manufacturing
ability, and will reduce other corporations' faith
in X-COM's ability to defend the Frontier.
Use any means necessary to prevent the aliens from
accomplishing their mission. If possible, disable
and capture any alien fighters not previously
researched and return them for examination.
@Defend OPP
A Ore Processing Plant is under attack.
Use any means at your disposal to eliminate the
attackers before they can take out the OPP.
The loss of this facility would significantly
impact the operations of the owner.
This, in turn, could impact X-COM finances in the
near future.
@Defend OPP in a Asteroid Belt
An Ore Processing Plant in a asteroid belt is
under attack. Eliminate all attacking vessels
before they are able to destroy the facility.
The owner assures us that X-COM's financial future
could be hanging in the balance. If at all possible,
capture any new alien fighters encountered and
return them for examination.
@Alien Attack on Freighter Convoy
A freighter convoy is under alien attack.
Your mission is to defend the convoy and prevent
its cargo from being captured or destroyed.
Use any means necessary to assure the convoy's
safety and keep our supply lines open. If possible,
attempt to capture any alien vessels not
previously encountered. The study of new alien
systems and equipment is the key to X-COM's
successful defense of the Frontier.
@Pirates Attacks Freighter Convoy
A freighter convoy is under attack. Long-range
scans show that the aggressors are not alien in
origin. The attacking vessels are Kabron Pirate
fighters. You are authorized to use full punitive
force to eliminate the raiders and safeguard
the convoy.
@Deep-Space Ambush!
Our squadron has been ambushed by hostile forces!
Eliminate all enemy targets.
@Deep-Space Encounter
An alien fighter squadron has been encountered.
Your mission is to eliminate or capture all alien
targets in the area. If successful, the impact on
alien forces in this area could be significant.
Good luck.
@Ambush Pirate Squadron
Long-range sensors have pinpointed the location
of a Kabron Pirate raider squadron, bound for an
unknown destination. By engaging the pirates here,
in deep-space, we can minimize the loss of innocent
lives and valuable property. Every pirate vessel
eliminated helps to diffuse the growing pirate
problems in the Frontier. Good luck.
@Ambush Alien Freighter Convoy
The alien freighter convoy you are about to engage
is most likely ferrying valuable cargo between alien
installations somewhere in the Frontier.
The elimination of this convoy will disrupt the
aliens' supply lines and could severely impact
their war effort. The alien vessels are unlikely to
remain in the area for long. You must eliminate or
disable all the alien freighters and their escorts
before they make the jump into hyperspace.
@Ambush Alien Freighter Convoy with a Special Alien Component
An alien freighter convoy has been detected.
Our scans indicate that this convoy is
transporting some sort of alien component never before
encountered. The capture and examination of this
component is vital to our understanding of the
aliens' ultimate plan - therefore, your mission is
to eliminate the convoy's fighter escorts while
merely disabling the freighters themselves.
Complete your mission as quickly as possible,
before the convoy can make the jump to hyperspace.
@Attack Alien Mining Platform
The aliens' network of orbital mining platforms is
vital to their economy. If you are successful in
eliminating the facility you are about to engage,
you will inflict significant short-term economic
damage to the alien infrastructure. If conditions
allow, you should attempt to disable any defending
spacecraft that have not yet been studied and
return them for examination by GSC scientists on Earth.
@Attack Alien Outpost
Orbital outposts are the central force in the
aliens' economic infrastructure. By destroying the
outpost you are about to engage, you will seriously
impact the alien's economy, and severely disrupt
their supply lines in this region. As always,
conditions permitting, you should attempt to
capture any unknown alien craft for later examination.
@Attack Alien Base
An attack on an alien base is a strike directly at
the heart of the aliens' operations in the Frontier.
As such, this mission promises to be extremely
dangerous. Total destruction of the base can only
be accomplished by taking out the base's central core.
Even if you are unable to destroy the entire base,
you should attempt to inflict as much damage as
possible before you are forced to disengage --
every pod you destroy can significantly affect the
base's operations. Individual base pods can be
included in the targeting cycle by pressing the
"I" key. Expect heavy resistance.
Good luck, and don't get hurt!
@Destroy Alien Probe
You are about to engage an alien probe.
Although there is no sign of activity at this
time, some alien fighter activity has been noted
in this region. Use caution as you engage the probe.
If you do encounter alien vessels, take advantage
of any opportunity to capture them and return
them for examination by GSC scientists on Earth.
@Defend X-COM Probe
One of our probes is under attack.
Eliminate all enemy vessels and prevent the
destruction of the probe.
@Destroy the Alien Doomsday Weapon
You are about to embark on the most vital -
and difficult - mission of your career.
The 'MacArthur' will transport you to a region,
just outside the black hole that acts as the
gateway to the alien's micro-universe.
Long-range scans show that this area is being
patrolled by a large fleet of alien fighter craft.
The 'MacArthur's' armament and shields cannot
withstand a prolonged onslaught - therefore,
your first priority is to clear all remnants
of alien presence from this region so that the
'MacArthur' can pass. In addition to protecting
the 'MacArthur', you must protect the ship
carrying the Nova Bomb. Once the area is secure,
return to 'MacArthur' , and you will be ferried
through the black hole.
Once inside the alien universe, you must destroy
the Doomsday Weapon. Make sure that the ship
carrying the Nova Bomb is well-protected.
Once this ship is in the clear, launch the
Nova Bomb at the star in the alien universe,
or give the order for your wingman to do so.
Defend the bomb until it is able to attain
maximum velocity. Once the Nova Bomb has safely
entered hyperspace, return to the 'MacArthur' as
quickly as possible for passage back through
the black hole.
During both parts of the mission, keep in mind
that you must protect the 'MacArthur' - she is
your only way into and out of the alien universe.
Good luck. The fate of humanity is in your hands.

@Release of New Computer Operating System Delayed
Ninsoft Corporation announced today that the
release of their new operating system,
"Portals 67" will be delayed for at least another
few weeks. "With the exception of one game in
early 1998, no piece of computer software has
ever been released on time," said an irritable
Willy Fence, president of the computer/entertainment
conglomerate. "It's high time all the damned
cyber-geeks got used to it!"
@Long-Anticipated Operating System Gets a New Name
The marketing department of Ninsoft quietly
announced a name change for the mega-corporation's
new operating system from "Portals `67" to
"Portals `68". "The vicious rumors that the name
change is an indicator that the product will be
delayed couldn't be farther from the truth,"
says Nick Thomas, Ninsoft marketing guru.
"It's simply that '68' is a much more
user-friendly number than '67'. Marketing surveys
show that people hate all the sharp edges on the
number '7'." The operating system is still in
beta test at this time.
@Another Name Bites the Dust: A Farewell to "Portals `68"
Accompanying the rumors that Ninsoft's new
operating system might release as much as two
years late, comes yet another name change for
the product. Goodbye "Portals `68" - hello
"Portals `69". "Some people think this is an
admission that we really are running two years late,"
said marketing rep Nick Thomas.
"Not true. It's just that, demographically,
we have found that many consumers - especially the
18-to-30 crowd - really like '69'. We have lots
of surveys to back this up." The product is now
entering its fourteenth month of beta testing.
@Ninsoft Scraps New Operating System; Releases New Game Instead
In a recent press conference,
Ninsoft president Willy Fence announced
that "Portals `69" (formerly "Portals `67"
then "Portals `68") will not be released as
an operating system. Instead, the software
will be released as an entertainment title
called "Bughunt - the Quality Assurance Simulator".
"It's the first game of its kind," touts Fence.
"Well, at least its the first game where
players were EXPECTED to find the bugs..."
@Influx of Raw Materials Revitalizes the Mega-Primus Project
The construction of Mega-Primus, which had been
going slowly due to lack of resources for over
two years, is now going full-speed ahead thanks
to the influx of raw materials from Outposts
on the Frontier. Mega-Primus, the self-contained
city concept that is meant to greatly improve
the human condition on Earth, is expected to be
completed and fully-operational by spring of 2080,
just one and a half years behind the original schedule.
@City "Recycling" Projects Continue
For those of you keeping track, you can add
New York and Chicago to the list of cities that
have been "recycled" for raw materials and
equipment in "Operation: Reclaim". The two
cities in the North American Alliance were among
the largest and most populous in the world
until global pollution forced their evacuation
in the early 2050s. New York and Chicago join Paris,
London, Washington DC, Madrid, and Poughkeepsie
as cities chosen for leveling, material reclamation,
and replanting as progress on Mega-Primus commences.
@Hybrid Culture Unearthed in Roswell
A small colony of Sectoid-human hybrids was
discovered last week, living in the sewers and
catacombs beneath the ruins of the Roswell Urban
Complex in New Mexico, NAA. X-COM Psi-Squad troopers,
investigating reports of worker illness on the
"Operation: Reclaim" city recycling team working at
the Roswell site, took the 456 members of the
underground community back to the Galactic Science
Corps Labs in X-COM's Central City base in the
Illinois desert for observation.
@Hybrid Colony's Origins Tentatively Traced to Mid-Twentieth Century
The colony of Sectoid-human hybrids found in
New Mexico may well have origins that go back
well past the start of the First Alien War.
In fact, Scientists say that the alien roots of
the hybrid race might go back as far as 1947,
when a craft of alien origin reportedly
crash-landed in the desert near the then small
town of Roswell. If found to be true, this find
would completely contradict the government
document "Roswell - The Absolute Last Report"
published in 2047 on the one-hundredth
anniversary of the incident.
@Sectoid-Human Hybrids Demand Freedom
Roswell's last, most famous residents - some
456 Sectoid-human hybrids - have demanded
that they be set free from the "guest"
facilities at X-COM's Central City base.
The GSC scientists who have been studying the
curious beings have been barred from commenting
on the situation by the director of X-COM's
Earth Corps and government officials of the
North American Alliance. X-COM's official
statement on the matter is that, until more
is learned about these people, they are a
security risk that must be contained.
@Religious Cult Demands the Release of the Roswell Aliens
Members of the Cult of Sirius, a group of alien
sympathizers established in the mid-2040s,
have demanded the immediate release of the
Roswell hybrids from captivity in the
Illinois desert. The Cult's leader and founder,
Roscoe Ulysses Sirius, says that the Cult has
documented proof that the hybrid beings have
been the subject of heinous experiments at
the hands of GSC scientists. The group even
claims to have a holo-vid showing an autopsy
being performed on a live member of the
Roswell group. X-COM and government officials
dismiss the stories, calling them "patently ridiculous".
@Roswell Hybrids Released - An Editorial
The Sectoid-alien hybrid beings have been
released from the Central City X-COM base
after their leader convinced misguided X-COM
and Government officials that the hybrids were
not psionic and posed no threat to anyone.
In an exclusive interview Mary Francisco,
benevolent and beautiful leader of the hybrids
and their newly-formed political organization,
the Mutant Alliance, says that she simply
explained the situation and officials saw it
her way. After talking with Ms. Francisco,
this reporter - who, admittedly, had his
concerns about the possible threat these beings
posed -- cannot help but see things from the
Sectohumes' point of view. I, for one, am ready
to take up arms, if necessary, to see that the
Sectohumes are never imprisoned again!
@GSC Probe Detects Signs of Interstellar War
The Galactic Science Corps deep-space probe
"Ranger 3", thought to be lost in space since
shortly after it was launched in late 2063, began
transmitting again last week, relaying images that
have sparked rampant speculation in both scientific
and military circles. The images, transmitted from
approximately 60 light-years from Earth, reveal
the remains of what was apparently an interstellar
war of vast proportions. Since visual analysis does
not reveal the origins of the warring species,
so "Ranger 3" is currently gathering debris samples
for testing purposes.
@Debris Analysis Deepens Interstellar War Mystery
Analysis of the debris collected by deep-space
probe "Ranger 3" in the Huer sector has answered
many questions about the apparent interstellar war
that took place there - and raised many new
questions as well. All of the debris gathered is
alien in origin. Many of the samples match the same,
general molecular structure as debris samples from
alien ships in the Frontier. Other samples,
however, are composed of materials never before
encountered by Earth science. The GSC has
catalogued the samples, and hopes "Ranger 3"
continues to operate long enough to shed some light
on this mysterious new alien race.
@Probe Scans Reveal Evidence of Terran Presence in the Huer Sector
High-detailed particle analysis of the site of an
interstellar war in the Huer Sector has revealed
an ion particle trail consistent with that
produced by old-style sub-light displacement drive
systems used aboard Earth vessels years ago.
Though it is impossible that a sub-light vessel
could have traveled more than 60 light-years in
less than five years, some sources claim that this
could be evidence that the "UGS Patton", an
X-COM military vessel that was presumed destroyed
in Mars orbit five years ago, was actually
transported to a different sector of the galaxy and
may, even now, be attempting to return home.
GSC scientists are attempting to re-activate the
drive systems on the "Ranger 3" probe so that it
can follow the trail of this phantom Terran vessel
and, perhaps, resolve the mystery.
@GSC Loses "Ranger 3" Comlink; Probe Presumed Destroyed
While following the ion trail of what was
apparently a Terran spacecraft in the Huer sector,
the GSC probe "Ranger 3" was apparently attacked
and destroyed by an alien vessel. The last image
from the probe's tracking camera showed the
approach of an alien spacecraft. This ship was,
according to a spectral analysis performed by the
probe, Sectoid in origin. Shortly after the
image was received, "Ranger 3's" telemetry was
abruptly lost. Although they intend to send
another probe and, perhaps, a manned mission to
the Huer sector to continue the search, it may be
years before the GSC discovers whether the
suspected Earth vessel is actually the missing
"GSC Patton".
@Mine Workers to Picket "Patton" Ceremony
Workers in the Mars Elerium Miners Organization
(MEMO) plan to hold a peaceful demonstration
outside the newly built Patton Spacedock facility
at Mars Colony 1 next week. The demonstration is
to coincide with the dedication ceremonies,
which will feature a speech by Premier-President
Cameron. The miners hope that this public display
will bring the poor working conditions and low
pay of the Martian Elerium miners to the attention
of the governments of Earth.
@"Patton" Crew Honored in Ceremony
Five years after her mysterious disappearance on
the first planetary survey mission to Mars after
the Second Alien War, the "UGS Patton" and her
crew were honored at a ceremony at Mars Colony 1.
"The officers and crew of the "Patton" were
prime examples of dedicated scientists who were
willing to give their lives in their quest for
knowledge," said North American Alliance
Premier-President Cameron. "It's a shame they
never got to see the face of their enemy before
they perished." Although several hundred members
of the Mars Elerium Miners Organization held a
protest outside the newly dedicated Spacedock
complex, there were no reports of violence of
any sort.
@Premier-President Cameron Assassinated!
Just two days after delivering a commemoration
speech for the new Patton Spacedock at Mars
Colony 1, North American Alliance
Premier-President Cameron was shot and killed by
a sniper who had apparently been hiding near the
leader's transport. Although the assassin has
not been apprehended, medical experts have
recovered the assassin's weapon, an old-style
plasma rifle of the type used during the First
Alien War. Authorities have called in the
newly-formed Mars Security force (MARSEC) to
investigate.
@MARSEC Launches Investigation into Mining Union
Mars Security, the company in charge of the
investigation into the assassination of
Premier-President Cameron last week at Mars
Colony 1, has launched an in-depth
investigation into the recent activities of
MEMO - the Mars Elerium Miners Organization.
This investigation comes as a result of the
mining organization's recent public protests
against poor working conditions and low pay.
MEMO officials deny all allegations against
the organization.
@Seven Killed in Martian Street Skirmish
An argument escalated into gunplay yesterday
when government forces opened fire on thirty
members of the Mars Elerium Miners Organization
who were staging a protest outside the
governor's palace on Bradbury Street in
Martian Colony 1. "The protesters were
non-violent at first," says Mars Governor Val Smith.
"Then chants turned to taunts, taunts turned
to threats, and...well, then this tragedy."
Among the dead were five of the protesters and
two of the palace guards. As a result of the
incident, MEMO president Murray Ryan has refused
to cooperate in any further MARSEC investigations.
@Cameron's Killer Identified - Violence Ensues
After an exhaustive investigation, MARSEC
investigators have traced the weapon that
killed NAA Premier-President Cameron to
Lee Baldwin, vice president of MEMO, the
Mars Elerium Miners Organization. Apparently
tipped-off by an inside informant, Baldwin's
deserted home had been equipped with a
sophisticated explosive booby-trap that killed
twelve of the MARSEC strike team members sent
to arrest him. The discovery that MEMO was
behind the presidential assassination plot has
led to widespread riots throughout Mars Colony 1.
@Martial Law Declared at Martian Colony 1
After three days of continuous fighting between
mine workers from MEMO and the Martian
authorities, Governer Smith has declared a
state of martial law in the colony.
MARSEC, the Mars Security Force, has increased
its presence in the colony by over one
thousand troops. Crack MARSEC strike teams
are combing the colony, quelling pockets of
violence along the way.
@Peace Reigns Once Again on Mars
After seven days of fighting, which left a
total of 95 dead and 190 injured, MARSEC
troops have managed to end the riots that
have held Martian Colony 1 in their grip
for so long. Conceding defeat, Murray Ryan,
president of the Mars Elerium Miners
Organization, turned himself over to authorities.
Ryan has been charged as an accessory to the
murder of NAA Premier-President Cameron, who
was assassinated several weeks ago by
Lee Baldwin, Ryan's second in command. Baldwin,
who fled the Colony shortly before he was to
be arrested, has not yet been found.
@Pro-Alien Cult Clashes with Government Over Frontier Policies
Members of the Cult of Sirius conducted a loud but
ultimately non-violent demonstration outside
Congressional Plaza in New Washington today
protesting what they called "X-COM's gross
mistreatment of (their) alien brethren"
in the Frontier. The cultists claim that the
alien attacks on X-COM and civilian ships and
installations on the Frontier are provoked by
Earth's unwanted presence in what was,
obviously, an alien-controlled area of space.
The Cult's leader, Reis Markus, insists that
Earth's recurring problems with alien invasions
would end if we simply left them alone.
Newly elected North American Alliance president
Healey is expected to comment on the situation
in her State of the New Union address.
@President Healey Cautiously Defends Cameron's Interstellar Policies
In her State of the New Union address last week,
North American Aliance Premier-President
Healey stood behind the policies and edicts
established by former Premier-President
Cameron for X-COM off-world conduct, while
still expressing "empathy and understanding"
for the pro-alien members of the Cult of Sirius.
Reis Markus, the Cult's leader, expressed
outrage and exasperation at Healey's
statement, calling it "the typical non-position
of a typical Extropian politician". Protests
by Cult members continued unabated following
the Premier-President's speech.
@Dozens Injured as Cult Protesters Turn Violent
More than thirty people were hospitalized
and hundreds were jailed when members of the
Cult of Sirius, protesting the "mistreatment
and harassment of alien citizens in the
Frontier", traded chants and placards for stun
gas and incendiary grenades outside the gates
of Congressional Plaza today. Congressional
guards, with the help of Marsec security
forces, were able to contain the protesters
and end the violence before it escalated too
far. Reacting to the incident,
Premier-President Healey ordered the immediate
arrest of the Cult's leader, Reis Markus.
Markus, who submitted quietly to security
forces, denies any foreknowledge of the
incident, but praises his followers for
"acting on their conscience".
@Cult Leader's Escape Praised as an Omen
After only three days as a prisoner, Cult of
Sirius leader Reis Markus was found missing
from his cell in New Alcatraz penitentiary
this morning. Marsec patrols have conducted
extensive sensor-searches of "The Rock" itself
and the surrounding mining colonies in the
asteroid belt, but no sign of the prisoner
could be found. Although prison authorities
presume that Markus was killed in a
depressurization incident while trying to
escape, members of the Cult see his escape
as an Omen. They believe that Markus was
taken aboard an alien spacecraft and
transported to the Frontier as a military
advisor for the aliens. "There will be
retribution," said Kate Thryn, acting
leader of the group. "Reis will lead our
alien brethren to victory over their
oppressors. Our alien saviors will then
descend upon the Earth and eradicate the
non-believers in a storm of fire."
Despite the claims of Cult members, the
scan-logs of the prison show no sign of
alien presence in the asteroid belt at
the time of the prisoner's disappearance.
@Global Panic Ensues Over GSC/X-COM Intelligence Leak
Riots erupted in cities all over the world
after an undisclosed source in the Galactic
Science Corps headquarters in Geneva released
information regarding an alien transmission
recently intercepted by X-COM forces in the
Frontier.
The message apparently contains images of an
alien device known only as the "Doomsday Weapon".
A GSC briefing that accompanied these images
indicates that the alien device could destroy
the entire surface of Earth with a single
blast from its weapon. According to the
message contents, the alien device is
nearing completion.
Once this news broke early today, the
population of the world was thrown into
complete chaos. World leaders, most notably
Premier-President Healey of the North American
Alliance, have tried to quell the panic by pointing
out that X-COM is preparing to launch a
full-scale attack on the alien weapon.
No details on when this attack is to occur
have yet been revealed.
END OF FILE.
