=========================================================

Enclosed in this .zip is my PantherXL config for Quake3:Arena. This is just a basic controls and settings config, with no special scripts at all.

Some explanations:

Game controller support in Arena seems to be hacked over the mouse/keyboard support. Whatever you change in mouse settings affects the PXL trackball, and whatever you bind to the arrow keys is bound to the joystick axis. So if you want the ability to use the PXL sometimes and the mouse/keyboard at other times you should have 2 different configs... because one setup will hose the other.

NO ANALOG CONTROL IS POSSIBLE WITH THE JOYSTICK. Idsoftware in their infinite wisdom has decided to make game controller axis movement bindable events. Yes this is short-sighted and ill-advised. If you agree, complain to idsoftware, not MadCatz.

For some reason Arena is calling AUX buttons JOY buttons. I don't pretend to understand the reasoning behind this, but there it is. The throttle axis is read as JOY buttons as well; JOY16 is Throttle Up and JOY17 is Throttle Down.

KNOWN ISSUE: As you play, you may see constant and annoying "JoyXX is unbound" messages. This is a bug with Arena and not with the PXL nor with this config. Since id has decided to remove support for analog control and instead made game controller axes bindable, you can get these messages as a result of using the trackball. Seems Arena can't quite decide whether the trackball is a game controller bit or a mouse. Understandable when you realize that anything beyond the mouse & keyboard are outside of id's experience. The config now includes a set of "null binds" which should eliminate this problem entirely.

LOADING THE CONFIG:

Make a file called AUTOEXEC.CFG (if you haven't already). Make very sure AUTOEXEC.CFG and PXL_Q3.CFG are in the exact same location as Q3CONFIG.CFG (if you don't, then Quake3.exe won't be able to find them). Now add the line to the very end of AUTOEXEC.CFG:
	exec pxl_q3.cfg
...Be sure to follow that line with a carriage return (That means press the ENTER key!)

SETTINGS OF NOTE -- READ THIS:

cl_mouseaccel
I've turned this on, giving a modest value of 1.500. Since the mouse and trackball are using the same input code I figured I'd avail myself of this. You can go with a slower, more precise trackball sensitivity and still turn fast when you need to. Adjust this as you will; I've carried it out to 3 decimal places for this purpose. Set this to 0 if you don't like it at all.

joy_threshold
This governs the dead zone of both the X and Y joystick axes (also the throttle axis). Unfortunately they can't be set individually. I've set this to 0.285, since I found the default of 0.150 to be a bit too tight with 'arrowkey' movement and going to 0.500 is way too sloppy. If you can't stop moving, increase this to fix. Although perhaps you should recalibrate your stick in the Windows control panel -- the fault may be there.

in_joyballscale; sensitivity
Again, the mouse/trackball code seems to be the same, so both of these are set in the config. I've left them at the defaults, since I'm setting pitch and yaw individually (see below).

m_pitch; m_yaw
Here's where I've set trackball sensitivity. I've increased pitch about 40% over the default, and yaw about 160% over the default. I feel this is better than using 'sensitivity' or 'in_joyballscale'. If you turn acceleration off (see cl_mouseaccel), you might want to increase m_pitch and m_yaw further.

EDITING:

Anyway, the config is fully commented so muck around in there to your heart's content. Pressing ALT>ENTER while running Arena will put the game in windowed mode, so you can edit and save the config while the game is running. Then just enter:
	exec pxl_q3.cfg
...at the console to see your new config take effect.

REVISON HISTORY:

Dec 4, 1999:
*No changes to the config. Update reflects testing under the Q3:Arena retail game, so everything should still work as advertised.
*Instructions for "Loading the Config" are a little more explicit.

Nov 22, 1999:
*Added null binds for joybuttons that the PXL doesn't have, to quiet Arena's constant complaints that "JOYXX IS UNBOUND". Thanks to a tip arrived at independently by Phatty[GOON] and [pA3D]_The Juice (as told to me by [A3D]Tomcat).

Nov 19, 1999:
*Changed bindings for HAT1 because id decided to rename the buttons for some perverse reason.

Sept 17, 1999:
*Reduced level of mouse acceleration from 2.000 to 1.500.
*Moved the zoom function from JOY3 to the throttle, since the throttle works but is good for little else.
*Moved "use item" from JOY13 to JOY3.
*Left JOY13 unbound for a user's custom command.
*Added a crappy bitmap.
*Fixed spelling in this file; it seems I can't spell 'autoexec' :-)

Aug 5, 1999:
*The first version of the config and this file.
