Description of HexQuake
-----------------------
HexQuake is a modified version of QuakeDC, a port of the classic Quake game for the Sega Dreamcast gaming console.

Since it was not possible to edit and compile the QuakeDC source code due to it being not available, the MIDWAY_1.EXE file was hexedited in an attempt to improve it as much as possible, and to make it look more polished. The most important changes in it is that the CD audio is on by default, and the full version isn't needed to play modified games anymore.

A 0GDTEX.PVR file was added, as well as a IP.BIN with VGA box support, and some documentation.

There is a quakedc.dat file stored in the included PAK1.PAK file. It is required for the engine to run either the full version of Quake or modified games.

Changes
-------
- A IP.BIN file with VGA box support is included.
- Added a proper 0GDTEX.PVR file.
- Added a DOCS folder with the files Readme_first.txt, HexLog.txt, QuakeDC.txt, and QuakeDC_history.txt.
- Only the five required WinCE DLLs are included. These DLLs are smaller versions edited by Moi to save some RAM space.
- The CD audio is enabled by default.
- You don't need the full version of Quake to play modified games.
- A custom PAK1.PAK file containing the quakedc.dat file is included to allow the use of modified games.
- The engine doesn't bind the controller's buttons automatically at startup, so you can use custom configuration files to set it.
- You can use the r_fullbright, scr_ofsy and scr_ofsz variables in deathmatch games.
- Renamed all d3d_ variables to gl_, to make it more close to GLQuake standards.
- The "net" and "turtle" images aren't loaded from the gfx.wad anymore.
- Added the HexQuake name and release date in the Multiplayer menu.
- Replaced the "Mouse Look" command by the "Kill" command in the customize keys menu, because the +mlook command doesn't work.
- Replaced the "Press y to exit" text in the Quit menu by a "Press start" text.
- Corrected the spelling error in the "insufficient" word in the message that appears when trying to save a game to a VMU with insufficent space.
- Removed the system messages that appeared when the game boots.
- Removed the message "execing %s" when loading config files.
- Removed the message "meshing %s..." when loading alias models.
- Removed the message "VERSION %4.2f SERVER (%i CRC)" when loading a map.
- Removed the message ""%s" changed to "%s"" when some variables are changed.

Changes to the DLLs

How to use this distribution
----------------------------
Make a directory for HexQuake on your computer and extract the contents of this distribution to it.

This release doesn't require the full version of Quake to run mods, it only needs the included PAK1.PAK. In the case you want to use it with the PAK1.PAK from the full version of Quake, you just need to renumber the included PAK1.PAK to, for example, PAK2.PAK.

Take the PAK0.PAK file from the ID1 directory of the Quake shareware (or PAK0.PAK and PAK1.PAK from the full version) and put it in the ID1 directory of HexQuake.

Then burn it using your favourite method. Make sure that the 1ST_READ.BIN and MIDWAY_1.EXE are in the root along with the ID1 and WINCE directories. It's that simple.

If you want to make a multi-session, non-selfboot disc (this allows you to reburn the .pak files to change mods, add maps, etc.), burn the disc as a mode 1 data CD and be sure to leave the session open. This has been tested in Easy CD Creator and Nero. Should work in most other programs. This method requires the Utopia boot disc.
