*** CITADEL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ***

Q - Some enemies are missing, and strange error messages pop up when I kill certain monsters.

A - You are most probably playing Citadel with Knightmare or another custom engine. Citadel is a modpack in its own right, encoding various special entities which are not recognized by the above mentioned engines. Carefully read INSTALLATION AND GAMEPLAY on the readme file, and follow the instructions on how to setup Citadel in the correct way.

Q - I get the error "game is write protected" when I try to load a map.

A - You need to patch Quake II to the final version 3.20; see below.

Q - Where can I find the patch 3.20?

A - You can download it at www.idsoftware.com, as well as many Quake II fansites.

Q - I have created a new folder named "citadel", extracted all files there, and set up a shortcut as explained in the instructions, however the game doesn't start.

A - The "citadel" folder must be created in the Quake II *main* folder. It is a common mistake to place it in baseq2 or baseq2/maps, none of which will work.

Q - Ok, I have checked my directory structure and everything seems fine. Again I click on the shortcut and the game doesn't start.

A - Perhaps you have typed a bad command line in the Target field of the shortcut: see INSTALLATION AND GAMEPLAY in the readme file for the correct syntax.

Q - Is there a way to start Citadel without making a shortcut?

A - Of course. Install Citadel and run Quake II (the normal game). As the ID logo appears, pull down the console with the tilde key, and input the following commands:

set game citadel
skill % (0 easy, 1 medium, 2 hard)
exec citadel.cfg

Q - The key bindings stated in the instructions have been working for some time, but now they don't work anymore.

A - The files config.cfg and/or default.cfg have been messed up in some way. Try re-installing these two files from citadel.zip

Q - I don't like the default key bindings. How can I define my own?

A - A file named CUSTOM.CFG is provided for this very purpose. You can edit it with a normal text editor to define your favourite keys. This file can be loaded at any time from the console by inputing EXEC CUSTOM.CFG or with the short command MYKEYS. See also KEY BINDINGS on the readme file.

Q - What about multiplayer?

A - Citadel is a single player game: it does NOT support multiplayer nor cooperative gameplay.

Q - I couldn't find all monsters. Where are them?

A - A few enemies are concealed in secret areas, or may appear after performing specific actions which are not necessarily required to achieve your goals (this is most evident in the Main Complex map). Exploration is needed in order to achieve a perfect body count.

Q - Why there are no help messages in the Secret Level?

A - Help messages for the Secret Level were deliberately omitted. This was done to avoid confusion with regular mission objectives (besides, there are no specific goals to achieve in the Secret Level). Therefore, if you press F1 in the Secret Level, your field computer will always display the latest help messages.

Q - I was playing Citadel, then I've started an original Quake II level from the console, and some textures are now misplaced. Why?

A - Citadel uses custom textures which are named after certain id textures. This will likely cause texturing anomalities if you start an original Q2 map while you are playing in the Citadel directory. Quit Citadel and start Quake II if you want to play the original levels in the proper way.

Q - I've typed "give all" and the game crashed (index_overflow_error)

A - Please, don't use "give all": Citadel features many special entities (new weapons, new monsters, cutsom sounds, and so on) that push the Quake II engine to its limits. However "give all" puts even more stuff in your inventory, items that don't appear in Citadel such as the JetPack, the Flashlight, the Traps, etc. The Q2 engine will not be able to handle these addons, and this will eventually cause an index_overflow_error. Each map has been carefully planned and tested to prevent this occurrence during regular gaming. The most recent Q2 maps make use of Knightmare, EGL or other custom engines to overcome these limitations: unfortunately, Citadel is not compatible with these engines, because they don't support some of the special entities featured in it. See also INSTALLATION AND GAMEPLAY and KNOWN BUGS in the readme file.

Q - Can you send me the source code for gamex86.dll?

A - Sorry, I can not, simply because I did not write the code. Gamex86.dll is derived from a Knightmare DLL, which was modified via hex editing to include the new Citadel entities.

Q - I cant us3 teh cool jtepak ur gam crash OMFG lol1111

A - n00b detected. Please report to the Robotics Facility for being used as spare parts.
