I tried the combat1.zip but my unzipper does not know the archive type?! (I'm
using the public unzip 5.0. It works with pkzip 1.93a).

----- End Included Message -----

Well, I was using pkzip 1.93a (it unpacked fine for me using pkunzip).
I have repacked it using pkzip 1.1 and uploaded it to onion.rain.com.
It's in the incoming directory at the moment and I assume Jeff will
move it to the lessons directory sometime soon.

It wouldn't surpirise me if the programmers of Falcon put a saucer or
two in the game.

Many eons ago, I was flying the SubLogic sim around the Seattle area,
and saw a dot in the sky... there are NO other aircraft in that sim
(except for the primitive WWI mode), you fly all by your lonely...
so I headed toward it, and got close enough to intercept it. There,
in all their glory, were the wire-frame letters "UFO", flying along
pretty as you please.

And just the other day, I nailed a Migxx, and the pilot ejected. I
turned, slowed down and headed for the guy, so I could salute him
and go "nyah, nyah, nyah..." and generally embarrass him. I came real
close and well, I could *swear* that Roos looked just like ELVIS!

William Gibson (author of the 'neuromancer' series about ghosts, etc.
in Cyberspace; Father of "cyberpunk") have some fun with this one!

Subject: OFT Pricing in New Zealand !

I've been thinking about buying OFT for a while now. I've heard on the
net of people buying it from the Egghead (??) for $(US)20-25.

Recently I saw it in a local shop here in Rotorua, New Zealand for $(NZ)70
(about $(US)35) and told that was a special discount price !! I decided to
get another quote from my friendly Dick Smith (Ozisoft, the importers
recommended them). They sell it for the very special price of $(NZ) 99.95
($(US)50) !!!

Has anyone got the phone no for their local Egghead - I'll order it on
my credit card (air mail postage to NZ can't be more than $(US) 10, can
it ?).

[[ If you can dial 1-800 (U.S. toll free numbers) you can call
     +1 800 344 4233 (1-800-EGGHEAD). Otherwise, the local Egghead store
     here is at +1 503 626 7331 (Portland, Oregon) -- Jeff ]]

Thanks.

Subject: F15III Playable demo in wuarchive

For those who can't wait for the Falcon3 wannabe F15III, I've
uploaded a *playable* demo on wuarchive in pub/MSDOS_UPLOADS/demos,
filename F15IIIpdemo.zip.

It requires 2MB, VGA. File is 750+KB zipped. Slow enough that you
probably don't want to bother with less than, say, a 20mhz. I found
it a little jerky on my 386/33. The included text file (describing
controls) says that it hadn't been speed optimized. I hope not!

Run it by unzipping and typing "F15". DONT ON PAIN OF MUCH TROUBLE
type 'misc' (I was curious). Thought I lost my hard disk!

Some controls don't seem to work, but most do. If anyone successfully
fires offf any missiles or bombs, let me know how.

Anyway, it looks like it moved somewhat away from F15II towards F3.
The TWI and radar MFD's, and to a lesser extent HUDs, look like F3's
though too small. BUt you still have the option of the bogus 360
degree radar with cutsie icons of F15II, F117A, etc.

Managed to shoot down a couple of F1's that were dumb enough to cross
my path (with guns). Doesn't bode well for enemy AI and combat realism.

The blurb at the end says 3 theaters: Persian Gulf, Korea, Panama. Sound
familiar? Also says it has a campaign mode with related missions.

I've said enough. Check it out. Sorry that this isn't purely F3 related,
but figured most of ya'll would be interested.

Subject: Good Kill! Good Kill!

The "Good kill!" sequence is not from desert storm as an earlier poster
claims it is probably from the 1988 F-14 shootdown (ambush?) of two
Lybian Mig-23's.

It is also featured at more length on the Discovery Channel's Flight Command
episode culled from Time-Life's Air Superiority video, as well as in the
opening sequence of the Falcon 3.0 playable demo.

in all forms the swearing "I don't get a *fucking* tone" is edited or beeped.

On a related note, why does the AMRAAM tone (without a sound card) sound so bad
and why does the HUD say "shoot" even when there is no real chance of hitting
the bogie? The tone (actually a beep) also goes on and on.. even after you have
taken a shot at the bogie. It is so annoying esp when locked to a friendly
that I shut of the sound and only re-enable it for IFF.

Sometimes I just switch to DGFT to get rid of it. I will appreciate a NAV
mode to the HUD in newer patches to the game.
