Subject: IFF Check Problems

First off, my apologies to Jeff (and all). Apparently, my mailer
sends out some strange line lengths, so I'll try to make an effort
to override it.

My question is regarding IFF checks. I have only recently actually
gotten my piloting skills to the point where I'm actually trying to
fly a campaign (as opposed to just flying IA). Hence the problem: IFF.
Obviously, in IA, everybody else in the sky was a bogie, so I didn't
have to worry about whom I was shooting. Now that I'm flying "real"
combat, though, I really hate to shoot down my own guys.

In my manual (I'm flying 3.0D, BTW), it says that "N" is the key for
an IFF check. The book doesn't say what's supposed to happen when I
hit "N", though. Sometimes, I get a beeping sound, sometimes nothing,
but that doesn't seem to be it, because even aircraft that I know
are friendly sometimes beep and sometimes don't. I have a PAS16 card,
and all my sounds are running through it, if that makes a difference.
I get digitized voices and music (and that annoying Sidewinder hum),
so I think the card works okay. Am I maybe in the wrong radar mode.
I usually leve it where the computer set it up ( I think it says SAD
on the HUD).

I really would appreciate some help on this. I'm sure these are pretty
basic problems, but I really feel bad shooting down my own supply
planes...

Thanks.

Subject: DOS 6 prevents installation of OFT?

With DOS 6 installed, OFT refused to install properly. It gave goofy
errors like "can't find file...", etc. So, what I did was to copy the
patch program from (3 1/2") floppy one and the three files with .rtp
extensions (one of them into the armsdata subdirectory). I then just
fed these patch files to patch. I also ran the batch script that nukes
all the old stuff (squardon records, etc). The game seems to run
properly... did I install things properly? The only bug I noticed was
that the system hung in the weapons selection screen when I did a copy
leader... that may have been fixed inthe patch, which I am downloading
right now.

There are two different feedbacks you get from IFF. One is auditory
(the beep), and one is visual (the IFF light on the left panel). When
you press the N key, an IFF query is sent to the aircraft that you
have locked on with the radar. If the aircraft returns a correct
response, the feedback items do their job (you hear a buzz and the
light lights up). If it doesn't, you hear and see nothing.

Only the aircraft that the radar is locked on is querried. It may be
that your sound card isn't emulating a Sound Blaster correctly so you
don't hear the IFF tone. However, you can always look at you left
panel after a query. The IFF light will remain lit for a short time if
the aircraft is friendly.

You must be using the complex flight model.. Doing this in hi-fi will drag you
down to below 275kts in a turning fight against a MiG-19. Most likely, this
tactic will result in a merry-go-round turning fight (around and around and
around..) because you'd be too slow to do anything else. If you were to somehow
get yourself in a furball against a couple of MiG-19s, you could get in alot
of trouble if you decide to use this tactic against them because it would be
very hard to shake a MiG-19 on your tail below ~350kts. What I ususlly do is
go into an Immelman, changing my heading by ~90 degrees left or right, then
swing my aircraft back around a half circle and bear down on the MiG-19(s).
Usually I'd catch them hanging midair in a stall :-) It works, at least, for
me :-)

Track view to dogfight? Playing Falcon Afterburner style, eh?

You should really get used to Padlock view. While the tactic above is useful
during daytime, I wouldn't even try that at night. If you're using HFR and the
enemy got ECM turned on, things could get very complicated. In a furball at
night, I just turn off the radar and go to guns and IRs while throwing on the
Padlock view, since all other views would be virtually useless, unless you've
got your eyes glued to the monitor.....
