Lots of stuff. Mostly A2G target management, ie switching sensors of
interest, swapping MFD displays, etc. Over the holidays, I hope to have
enough time to do up a B50 file that mimics the F-16 as close as possible. I
hope Jeff won't mind if I post it to the list, since I can't do FTP.

No, you can see the fpm on the HUD. For the F-16, looking at an 11-13 deg
AOA approach with a 3 deg glideslope. For the F/A-18 your looking at an 8
deg AOA approach with a 3-5 deg glideslope. The HUD has plenty of room for
that. I don't like the ILS shift, even if it does mess some other things up.

They just don't work. SH didn't include that capability. They know we want
it for F4.

You know the ` key activates the chat window?

What problems with later versions?? I have 3.04 and 3.05 loaded on my system
which is SCSI-only using an Adaptec 1542CF...

Cheers,

Mark.

I'm sure it doesn't apply to everyone... but a lot of people have been
having problems with falcon and scsi cards on 330h... but if you don't have
the problem then good for you. =)

In fact I've installed and run every variant of F3 from the d patch onward
without trouble on the 1542B card I have. I have recently swapped to a 1542C
card to be able to move the I/O port and still boot from SCSI.

My C card is now set at 334H so that I can use my newly aquired Roland LAPC-1
card for sound (love that stall horn effect ;-); the Roland is hardwired for
330H for the MPU-401 port.

If anyone's still having problems with 1542B or C model, I'd recommend
looking hard at your memory manager. I have been completely unable to get F3
to run on my box using either QEMM 6.x and 7.x or MemMaker with either the B
or the C card... Only 386MAX has proven up to the challenge (no, I don't
work for Qualitas -- I relate my experience only so your mileage may vary).

Anyway my point, which I should have made in my earlier message, is that I'd
be happy to share config files and war stories with anyone still having
problems. I know how painful this stuff is -- it took me a long time (and
lots of net-suppplied advice) to get things stable enough to do away with a
boot floppy for Falcon... Take heart: it can be done!

Cheers,

Mark.

For those who has still to hear Roland sound for Falcon. you REALLY REALLY
have to try it. The only problem is, Roland stopped making lapc-1/mt-32. And
the new roland cards don't work. I found mine used for $100 (lapc-1). and it
works great... the gmidi emulation doesn't sound as well as the sampled
cards, but I don't think anyone can beat the synthesis for falcon.

From: michaelb@tenmail.mincom.oz.au (Michael Barnes)
Subject: Mig29 vs Falcon Performance

There have been some postings recently about whether the Mig or F16 had an
advantage in Head to Head play. This has been a topic of some contention
here at the 62nd Fighting Falcons in Brisbane, Australia, and I thought I
would let you know what our conclusions have been. (I'm not a hot-shot pilot
myself, I'm just the only one with Internet access - but this is what the
hot-shots have said...)

We have been using v3.05 network connected. The conclusions are based on
1v1 dogfights.

In Complex flight models, the F16 appears to have the advantage in turning,
and will more often down the Mig than visa-versa. This is with our best
pilot flying the Mig, BTW.

However, in High-Fidelity models, the reverse is the case (at least below
10,000 feet) - the Mig will out-turn the Falcon. This appears to be
partially because the Mig can fly at a much higher AOA (thus get it's nose
onto the F16 sooner). The trim control also has an influence. With
appropriate trim the Mig can pull up to 10G or more in a turning fight
(~8.4G sustained).

Finally, the rudders on the Mig apparently enable it to perform some
manouvers that the F16 finds very hard to follow.

The final conclusion of our top pilots - in High Fidelity, (with Blackout
OFF and Damage limiter ON, BTW) the Mig was greatly superior to the F16. (I
would like to see the test done with Blackout ON and Damage Limiting OFF for
a really conclusive result.)

Hope this was of interest.

Subject: MiG29 landings

Well, to be honest, I found the landing so easy exactly *because* the
speeds and AoA etc. do not matter as much as with the Falcon or the
Hornet. I basically cut the engine to idle power, level off at about 400 ft,
line up with the runway, and wait until the sucker bleeds speed enough
to drop onto the tarmac. Often I need to apply air brakes (and/or
drag chute) to get the speed to drop sufficiently. The 29th stays well
within envelope forever, so even if I think I drop a bit too fast,
I just pull up and maybe add a bit of throttle. That's it!

The lack of a flight path marker makes it a challenge to estimate
rate of descent and forward speed, and the corresponding glide slope.
But by maneuvering the throttle and the stick, you can easily get
the thing onto the numbers, in my experience.

*Get slow*! The MiG won't drop as suddenly as the US bricks. It very
gradually increases AoA and rate of descent.

Subject: Thrustmaster products.

Hello Falconers:

I have been using Falcon for several years now and have recently thought
of upgrading my old joystick with a Thrustmaster including the WCS,
adding rudders sometime down the road. Regarding hardware I must
proclaim a certain amount of ignorance.

I have a couple of questions regarding Thrustmaster products and I
thought that someone on the list could answer. Many of these questions
arose from reading the TMFAQ.

1) Dual game port. How can you tell if you have one. I have two game
ports in my machine (soundblaster disabled) can you tell by looking at
them if they are dual port? Is there a 'simple' test that would answer this?

2) Assume that I do have a dual game port, how important is it to have a
'speed adjustable' game port? I am running a 486 /25.

I know you are saying "Why don't you go out and buy a dedicated game
card?" Well the answer to that is I would but I dont have any room
available to put another card and I need all cards that are there.

As I said, excuse my ignorance but I thought that the list would be my
best source of information. Replies via e-mail, unless you think it is
something the whole list might benefit from. TIA

Paul
