Some more F/A-18 tidbits in response to email questions I've recieved re: my 'unofficial report on SH Hornet' - Larry. The Hornet I flew did have a complete new interior and HUD (as compared to the F16 or MIG), with the exception of similarity in the damage indicator panel. I do not know how 'current' the instrumentation was but it was primarily oriented around MFDs (Multi-Function Displays) which were consistent with the layout of F18 cockpits as I remember them from the few pictures that I have seen. Each MFD can be cycled thru various displays; radar, TWI, engine stats, etc. As we didn't have docs I was sort of doing the 'on the job training' thing as we flew into combat (hmmm, lets see what this does? and this?, and oh oh). Now I can empathize with those poor under-trained b*st*rds at the end of a losing war when they get sent into combat after 'instant' flight school. Most of the keyboard controls are unchanged with a few exceptions. The one that tripped me up the most led to a newly developed ACM tactic I'll call the 'Kamikaze Claw'. The 'H' key in Hornet drops the landing hook (instead of cycling the HUD colors). I'd get into a 1 circle head to head knife fight where the sun kept bothering me so I'd kept trying to change HUD colors but in reality flapped my landing hook up and down as I flew around sun blinded in circles with a faint hope of hooking my opponent's Mig before he gunned me. Keep this one in mind for those occasions where everyone's gone winchester and all the guns are jammed. I wonder if Shaw will include the 'Claw' in his next edition? RE: carrier approaches. I'm not so sure now that there are any additional views available. Someone pointed out that a recent F/A-18 product review claimed that there are supposed to be a bunch of LSO 'radio messages' that help guide you during approach. We had Radio Messages set OFF during my flights so I have no idea how effective these may be. There is definitely a 'meatball' on the deck, but I sure couldn't see it until the very last seconds (do in part I'm sure to fixation on the trap cables). I don't know how far out the 'meatball' is supposed to be used in real life, but it sure didn't seem like it was going to be effective at a distance to me. Not like a VASI system leastways. Anyone out there on the list familiar enough with carrier approach systems to give us an overview of how they really work? -Larry Bain lmbain@netcom.com ------------------------------- From: cisko@d0tokensun.fnal.gov (Greg Cisko) Subject: Re: DOS memory setup - Oh no, not again! >From: Gerry Roston >Subject: DOS memory setup - Oh no, not again! >Sorry to bring up a topic that's been beaten to death, but... >When I set up my system for game playing, i.e., I enable EMS >memory, this is the report I get from mem/c (shortened) >MSDOS 33629 >HIMEM 1168 >EMM386 3120 >COMMAND 3056 >MOUSE 272 >------------- > 41522 >FREE 613808 (599K) >The real question is this: is there anything I can do to increase >the amount of free memory. I am not at all certain that this is Strangely enough, you probably can get more memory out of your system. I say this because your MSDOS number looks high. Make certain that the "lastdrive" variable is not excessive, in your config.sys. This has been a problem on a few machines I've configured. Also make sure your "files" variable is not excessive. I'm using Cirrus Logic 5426 card with no problem of playing F3. I'm using OS/2, so no digital sound can be heard. :( However, which 5426 card are you using, ISA or Local Bus? I'm afraid there is some difference. I've also install the F3 on SCSI harddisk (Maxtor 340MB). I think I better list my config here : 486 DX/33 ISA Motherbord Quantum 120MB ISA Harddisk (boot disk w/OS/2) Adaptec 1542CF SCSI Controller Maxtor 340MB SCSI Harddisk (my F3 is installed here) SB 2.0 (going to change to SB 16ASP) Cirrus Logic 5426 ISA display card w/1MB RAM Hope this helps.
