Subject: F16 Crash in Madison, WI

An F16 crashed in Madison , WI on Thursday, March 30, 1994. The plane was
part of the 128 TFW which is associated with the air national guard. The
pilot departed on runway 36 and had been aloft for about 5 min. when a engine
warning light came on. He turned the F16 around and headed back to base. On
approach to runway 18, apparently a hydraulic systems failure occurred , and
the approach and landing were considered "hot". Upon landing, the pilot had
no braking capability and this was announced over the radio, at which time
the arrestor cable was raised at the end of the runway, and the pilot lowered
his arrestor hook, but the hook failed to connect with the cable. At this
point the pilot ejected from the plane, flew approx. 200 feet into the air,
his chute did open, but did not break the fall completely, and did suffer
some injuries. The F16 veered off the runway, crashed and caught on fire.
The plane was destroyed, and replacement costs will be in the $15-20 million
range. The 28 year old pilot was considered an experienced aviator, but had
only 200 hours in a F16.

Mickey, fyi, SIMCAP (publisher of "Intercept" magazine) is about to start
another North American F3 Modem Tournament. I believe it is scheduled to
start in the begining of April. Prize awards for the top few competitors.

For more info, contact Eric Pearson at SIMCAP 716-436-8500 / CI$ 74130,2210
(sorry, no Internet that I know of).

For what it's worth, Intercept is a great rag, IMHO, that exclusively covers
Combat Flight Sims. SIMCAP also offesr a 'Flight Sim Modem Players'
database service, free to Intercept subscribers, which allows modem players
to make contacts outside of tournament play. I'm not a F3 modem player
(gotten spoiled by F3 Network play) so I can't testify about the players
database service, but Intercept is great and worth more than the $20/yr
subscription.

Subject: Hornet Carrier has Cloaking device ;-I

I was on my "umpteenth" final approach, about 100 feet away from touching
down on the deck when the carrier VANISHED before my eyes! *****ARE YOU
READING THIS Greg Cisko? *****
After trying invain to complete the landing, I smashed up pretty bad. My
two wingies, that were waiting for me to land, kept circling for a while
(on fumes by this time!). Then, the carrier re-appeared and one wingie
started an approach. After a minute, VAMOUSE! no carrier. Couldn't watch
any more so decided to end the mission with my two guys still flying. The
debrief listed my dead (no surprise) but also my wingmen as CRASHED.
Doesn't the game compute the likely-hood of getting back ok based on
relative distance from a friendly base? Why were my wingmen killed? Is it
related to the missing carrier or is it necessary to land wingmen in hornet?

Sad thing was that I had been re-playing this mission (a S & D over Korea)
all night trying to get the waypoints just right so my second flight would
get to the target zone at about the same time as my flight. We all got
away ok and I even picked up 3 or 4 kills on the way back (a Mig29,
Transport, and a copule of Mig19's...with my cannon alone!). My BEST
mission of the night, and the only one that I had the chance to land in :-(

Mike.
