One of the Kesmai guys in GEnie said, in a posting on the Games Roundtable,
that Air Warrior would be available for the 3DO entertainment deck.

I think the reason you can't eject much in jTornado is that it resolves
many things as fatal, and throws you into the death scene. So if you take
a real serious SAM hit, or hit a building, you are already out of the
picture, quite suddenly. Too realistic? Not with the option to dump the
results.

Has anyone figured a good way to hit the four targets with an lgb group?
I find that I go in and release all four at 4 or 5 second intervals, but
the first one hits, I move the designator and WHAMWHAMWHAM the other three
pile in on top of each other! How can I get them to stay spread out?

I do love wandering around with the tiald on, scoping out planes on the
enemy airfields and peeking into people's backyards...Makes me wonder what
these guys do with it on real training missions...:-0

I wrote earlier about looking for M1 Tank platoon. I
found it at a mailorder place called Chips & Bits.
Unfortunately it comes bundled with the original Gunship.
Fortunately they only want $12 US for it.
Also I've seen a flight sim in the stores that I've
heard nothing of on the flight sim internet groups. Air
Duel by Microprose. (really I dont work for Microprose, it
just seems that their stuff is catching my eye lately.) Has
anyone flown this sim? Is it any good? It's supposed to
have planes from all eras, from WW I to present. You can
mix and match, maybe shoot down the Red Barons Fokker with
an F16 or something. Any info on this would be
          appreciated.

Any advice on flying and fighting the planes in the Pacific theatre? I'd
like to hear tips on effective use of the P-38, Zero, and Corsair, especially.
(Especially, that is, after my amazing 375 knot dive straight into the ground
last night with a P-38. This was the flight after I had hit the "8" key -
which turns OFF the engines - when I meant to hit the "7" key - which turns
ON emergency power. Some nights are like that.)

to Joerg Stenger

re the multiple targets with LGBs.... the bombs hit wherever the designator
is currently, not when the bombs was released. So to hit multiple targets
...

find first target and lock
release bomb, wait 5 seconds, release bomb, wait 5 seconds etc etc
wait for first bomb to hit
drag (left button) target onto second target
wait for second bomb to hit
drag onto third target ... and repeat as necessary

its damn difficult until you get used to it ...
... and then sooooooo satisfying !!

good luck ! Simon

I bought Air Duel in hopes of playing with a friend over the modem (he
bought a copy also). All I can say is that it really stunk up the place.
First off we could not get a modem connections to save our life. We
do relatively well with F3 and very well with Tornado and F15III.
The graphics are nice but the flying is lousy! The F16 model is the pits
and it is hard to fly. On my 486/25 with 8 mb ram and Diamond Speed Star
24X is was choppy (especially when in the F16, not so much in other planes).
The views are very bad IMO. Their version of padlock or what ever only takes
place when you hold a button down, then it takes time for you to swing your
head in that direction. This makes keeping an eye on you foe *very*
difficult. Not that F3 Padlock is super realistic about what a pilot
can and cannot see, but I beleive certain liberties *must* be taken
when creating a flight sim. As PC pilots we are at a great disadvatage
over the real pilot in respect to situational awareness, but I digress.
The dog fighting is not all that great and the missions are neither
intersting nor continuing. The flight models are aimed at novices
but the game play is so bad even verteran fliers will have trouble
flying against the computer. I wrote MPS two days later and told
them what I thought of this sim (when it was fresh in my head :-)
Unfortunately the manual was damaged during a sudden thunder shower and
I could not return it to EB for a refund. MPS took it back in a
even trade for Legacy. I thank MPS very much for such good
customer support!
I would avoid air duel at all costs.
P.S. It was made by a UK software publisher and is distributed by MPS

I know what you mean; it's kind of depressing! But some guys started
talking to me and helping me out one night, and then it became a lot of fun.

>As you fly as a lone wolf, you tend to get your tail waxxed a good bit.

Try boom and zooming. I used to get lots of kills that way flying on my
own. Takes a lot of time and patience, though.

Or just as good, get to know the people on Internet who play Air Warrior,
like myself and Jim Knutson. We can set up times when we'll meet online.
You've got a lot more to look forward to when you're sure there will be
people on that you know, IMO.

We can all be lone wolves together. :^)

You're sure you're talking about 869, right? I try to fly when I know
some squadron is having a "squad night." That way I can be sure there will
be at least a small crowd of people on.

>Does the realism theatre include full lethality?

869 is an experimental arena, so lethality varies. It's usually pretty
close to offline lethality, but the hit bubble is larger than one wingspan
because of the warping in real time.

>The other night I bounced a P-38 in an FW190 -

Do you have the "local hits" option turned on? If so, you may sometimes
see hits that do not really count against the other plane for various
reasons. In this case, it sounds like you got a nice tail shot, so your
problem was probably just due to the low lethality setting.

>This sort of thing distorts the
>whole game for me, despite the obvious realism of AW in may other respects.

Lower lethality was put in for playability reasons. It will probably be
close to realistic once things get shaken out in the real time arena.
People have complained about this for a long time, and it looks like they're
finally getting what they want.

>Not at all, but matching icons and dots is not a model of anthing in the
>real world.

It's a model of aircraft recognition. I'm sure you realize how close you'd
have to get in AW to be able to tell planes apart by their shape. Icons
may not be ideal, but they work.

>I'd like to see the black dots change to colored dots at some
>realistic distance.

You and a lot of other people. I'm so used to the icons, though, that
it doesn't really matter to me.

>I also think the range readings next to the icons give
>too much information to the player.

It's an attempt to compensate for the limited resolution of the viewscreen.
In reality, you'd be able to judge distance better than by just looking at
the dots on the screen, even in 640x480. I agree the ranges unrealistically
precise, but I think it's a reasonable tradeoff. There may be better
compromises for this limitation, and if you can think of one, post it on
the AW bulletin board on GEnie! Kesmai is always willing to hear new ideas.

Yeah, I think the main differences are that it's a lot harder to FLY in
Air Warrior and there are a many more ways to screw up badly and doom
yourself to failure than there are in other sims.
