Alright! I was beginning to think that I was the last person around who
still thinks that FOTI is fun to fly. I happen to enjoy dinking around
with this flight sim from time to time. The Intruder is quite a bit more
fun to push mud around with than even a Falcon. Works absolutely great on
the slower machines as well.

Its too bad that no other flight sim since it has included the *neat* feature
of jumping to different planes in your flight. Once you finish your run with
one plane, you can just swap into your wingie and roll in hot with that plane.
If the bandits start messing with you, you can leave the air combat to the
decent AI or you can take matters into your own hands and go for a kill. In
FOTI I have found that computer pilots will hardly even fire a Sparrow, even
when the rules of engagement have been fulfilled. If I really need somebody
plastered I have to do it myself or pray for a lucky sidewinder shot.

Subject: Tornado chaffs

Hello,

Last week I bought a book written by the first tornado crew who were shot down
in the Gulf War. They were shot down after a failed loft attack on an airfield
(they do not know for sure why the attack failed, but they do not discard
forgetting to set the weapons computer mode to loft attack!), but apart from
paying close attention to the weapons delivery mode setting, what gave
me an idea to improve my performance at Tornado was the sentence where they
say that, when approaching the target (and before any missile were fired at
them), they started pumping chaff to avoid being targeted by the SAMs and AAAs.

Well, I have tried this and I must admit that it does not help a bit. I get
exactly the same amount of missiles after my tail regardless of the amount of
chaff I throw, so I wonder if DI guys have taken into account the possibility
of fooling radars with chaff and not only with ECM (I mean ground radars, not
missile radars).

Anyway I keep enjoying Tornado and flying as low as possible!

Cheers.

Subject: AW Questions - Episode 12

    Yet more newbie questions.....

  1. True or false - realism options have no effect on network play, the
options are preselected by the host? This would mean that everything is
'off' in page 870(no spins, blackouts, etc), and 'on' in the realism
arenas.

  2. How do ammo loads REALLY work? Either my math is deficient or the
book has conflicting info: the graph on p.34 says that the FW190 caries
1340 gun shells and 390 cannon shells. Then on p.32 it says that it
carried '950 rounds for its two machine guns, 500 for two of its 4 20mm
cannon, and 280 for the remaining two'. The numbers don't add up
correctly to me. OK, what's the real dope? How can I tell when my cannon
shells are out? Do the guns fire 1-1 (one cannon shell for every bullet)?

  3. If my country captures an airfield, does that make it friendly - can
I land there and get full credit for my mission?

   [ Yes. --Jeff ]

  4. What the hell is a 'flat turn'?

[ A turn where you only use your rudder. It's a slow turn that doesn't
bleed airspeed as much. --Jeff ]

  5. Where is the best place to get maps?

[ Well, there's shift-f10 for an in-flight map. Other than that, a few
       squads have maps. --Jeff]

  6. How long does it take for Konami to register your $50 credit - I
want to get the beta version so I can try the full reality page.

[ They'll send you email when they receive your coupon. As I recall,
it was a couple of weeks for me. --Jeff ]

  7. Do you find it better to use the 'local hits' option?

[ Personally I don't. I like to know when I hit my target. The local hits
make it harder to tell. (With local hits on, you see a hit when your
local computer *thinks* it may have hit, and you see debris fall off the
enemy plane if you actually hit it.) --Jeff ]

Thanks;

Pete Williams

Well, using the esteemed Grp. Cpt. deFault 8) I'm in a command campaign...
A few observations:

1) You wingies always hit their targets; they do not get blown away.

2) You do. 8)

3) Therefore, you can hit almost any target by sending the other Tornados
after really tough places - dense AAA/SAMs/fighters - and they will be pounded - while you stay alive in some less lethal place. The only thing the wingies
don'tseem to want to do is drop JP233 without you around, but this may have
been me screwing up with the waypoint commands too.

4) Morale is curently listed as "40 - 60", Allied Political Advantage: is
a low morale number good? This is counter-intuitive for me....

5) What you do doesseem to affect the campaign. I have concentrated on wiping
the enemy's logistical system from the face of the earth; the enemy is
listed by now as having 15% supply, and "none" supply at all airbases. I'll
report if I see any fighters - seems to me that w/o fuel there shouldn't be any
(and I've specially blown up all the hardened fuel dumps at all their airbases! 8) If nothing else, despite not concentrating on their airbases per se,
the air superiority rating is increasingly in my favor.

6) Campaigns are FUN! If you enjoy mission planning, you'll love them. I'll
second those who'd prefer a Falcon-style "camapign continues regardless if you
live or die on the mission", but it's relatively minor.

Good luck!
