Someone else than myself has also paid $70 CDN for Tornado! Thing is, I can't get the damn thing to work on my machine, and nobody seems to have experienced anything similar to my problem... I can't give the specifics for my computer since I'm not in front of it, but generally, this is what happens when I try to play the game: Installation was problem-free. The game loads properly initially, and presents me with the main menu. From this point on, things get a bit more complicated... All three main selections correctly lead to further menus, be they for mission selection, or mission planning (the mission planner works perfectly - and is very impressive). However, if I ever try to select any option which would lead to the 3-D simulated world (ie. takeoff, explore, flight demo, ...), the game pops back to the main title screen for a few seconds (HD working), and then fades out to a black screen and a completely frozen computer (CTRL-ALT-DEL does not work). I have a Modulux 486DX/33 with 4 megs RAM, 120 meg HD running on DOS 6 (doublespaced) with an ATI Vantage video card, internal modem (in COM 3), internal CD-ROM (inactive for game sessions - driver not loaded). Turning all sound options off does not solve the problem... I'll have to post another message for specifics (autoexec, config, etc...), but if this sound remotely familiar, I would appreciate any input! Thanks in advance, Jean-Philippe Pelletier PELLE96@MEDCOR.MCGILL.CA ------------------------------- From: masten@beta.lanl.gov (David A. Masten) Subject: RE: non-flying sims As Scott said, this is the place for all fancy-shmancy sims! Nice to see another subject raised. >Any inhibited Sub Drivers out there? What is your favorite classic (WW2) and >modern (Nuc) submarine simulation? How about the other side (Sub-hunting)? >How about battle group (carrier group?) simulations? Probably worth waiting right now. Scott mentioned Dynamix' Grey Wolf, which has been renamed "Aces of the Deep". Otherwise, the WWII sim of choice is MPS's Silent Servie II which you can get real cheap (even from MPS). Its graphics are still decent by todays standards. I'm waiting for EA's update of 688 Attack Sub called SSN-21 Seawolf (or some such), which is a modern day sim of the titled sub. I really liked 688 though it is dated. And CGW's wargame expert had a fairly low opinion of it, saying it seemed to be modelling WWII type combat with a modern sub. Still, it was fun, tense, and had a modem option (you vs Alpha sub. But I never used it :-() I too am waiting for Harpoon II. Harpoon is a lot of work, but I used it as a way to learn a bit about naval combat. >And if it has to fly, what's your favorite helicopter simulation? I've seen I'll second Scott's comments. I had, and enjoyed, Gunship2000. Very much in the tradition of other MPS sims (good and bad). But better than the rest in that you commanded a flight of five copters. Thanks! -Jeff ] Perry, You might also want to wait until around Christmas to buy a sub sim, Seawolf is coming from the same people that made 688 Attack Sub, and it sounds like it's going to be something else. The things I hear the most about are the hi fidelity physics modeling and the sounds, John Ratcliffe being the main programmer and one of the hottest names in sound generation on PC's today. There have been blurbs about it in all the game magazines lately. Gunship 2000 is proably the best helo sim you'll find these days, but sadly that's not saying much. 'Nuff said.
