Anyway, after finally upgrading my PC recently, I grabbed Tornado CD 1.0e ($20 at Babbages!) since I'd heard how fond many of you were of it. Had lots of trouble installing it, but have finally succeeded (I think) and can offer some possible advice (or at least, I can beg for sympathy ;-) First off, the install program was hopeless. It seemed to load some TSR to patch the CDROM interface, which promptly made my CD drive disappear from the system until a hard reset (not just Ctrl/Alt/Del!) brought it back. Neat trick. Instead, I copied all the files to my (for the moment) spacious hard disk, and wandered through the batch files to start the thing up. I'm running DRDOS 6 instead of MSDOS 5, so I had to convert LOADHIGH to HILOAD :-P, and work up a config.sys that left memory in an acceptable quanitity and state, and finally got the thing to come up. (For some reason, it won't run [infamous "not enough memory"] from a batch file; I have to type "hiload amp" from the command line.) The next struggle was trying to run it on my old system so I could try H2H (I know, it's not the best plane for dogfighting, but I don't have any other H2H sims. Is it really worthless in this mode?). I couldn't get rid of the "not enough memory" failures after *hours* of messing about with configurations (e.g. the same setup as on the other computer, with well over 600K free; also tried just barely 600K by loading up junk TSRs, etc.). Finally, I got a copy of MSDOS 5.0 (from someone who's upgraded to DOS 6), used the config recommended in the Tornado package, and holy cow, it runs. If anyone wants to see the exact contents of my startup files, send me email. Haven't yet tried the null modem link. With both systems, it sometimes seems to go deaf to joystick back (left, right, and forward still work - I can roll inverted and push up to climb :-P!) But maybe I'm pressing a wrong key somewhere (is there a "self-destruct elevators" key?) as I'm still new at flying this puppy. Trivial tip: the disk on my old PC is pretty slow, and the game takes long enough to load without seeing all the pretty logos from every company that knows how to spell "Tornado" fading in and out. So I wrote a one line C program: main(){ puts("Starting Tornado..."); } compiled it, renamed tornado/amp/intro.exe to oldintro.exe and put my new program in it's place. (If you don't have a compiler, you can use a copy of some innocous DOS exe file, like mem.exe, instead.) Finally, (who just sighed in relief? :-) since I have the Jenny Craig version of the manual, TCSC sounds like a great idea. But I *don't* do Windows! Nossir. Is there a way to view it from DOS? Wait, one more tip: USNF lovers should watch for a Discovery Channel Wings edition on the F104 Starfighter (Brent's favorite?) this week! --- "How am I typing? I think Digital Integration have got and understod the message "multiplayer" with the pilot/co-pilot two player option. Now we just wait for the first simulator with direct TCP/IP (SLIP or PPP) support as an option, so we can fly thogeter all over the world via Internet. I hope it's going to be a rainy summer :-).... == [include] ======================================================== From: jjbst19@vms.cis.pitt.edu Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim Subject: Digital Integration (Tornado) to Release New Apache Sim in April Date: 30 Mar 95 13:22:39 EST Yesterday I received a letter from Digital Integration who are the ones who created the best air-ground combat sim IMHO (Tornado). They are releasing a new Apache attack chopper sim!!!!!!!!!!! Release in the states and in Europe will be in April. They also sent me a slide show with about 15 or so screen shots of the new sim. I will try to upload this to ftp.iup.edu later today. This really looks cool....all in SVGA. These are the Features mentioned in the flyer that accompanied the letter: --full relief terrain with texture mapping, Gouraud shading, and light sourcing. --pilot/co-pilot two player option and head-to-head option --multi-player networking- up to 16 players in two teams. --10 training missions, 60combat missions, 3 campaigns --three real world areas: Yemen, Cyprus, and Korea --new 3-D visual technology optimised to provide unprecedented low altitude detail --SVGA screen resolution Hardware Requirements: Minimum: IBM PC 486SX 25MHz, VL bus, Vesa-compatible SVGA, 4Mb RAM, and CD-ROM Also supports Soundblaster, Adlib and Gravis sound cards The screen shots look really impressive! The detail of the multifunctional displayes in the cockpit are really wonderful--almost photo-realistic. If this product is anything like tornado in terms of realism then this sim will REDIFINE PC sims. I just hope that the SVGA graphics wont be to hard on the frame rate. It looks as though they put alot of effort into making this sim as "mathematically correct" as tornado, the letter stated that DI put several years into researching the aircraft before they even started writing the code. I just cant wait to see something elso come out of DI, IMHO Tornado was the most realistic sim-with the fewest bugs on the FIRST try!! ------------------------------------------------- Email address above is incorrect Send email to bills@neuronet.pitt.edu "working now to save time in april for "Apache Longbow"" ===================================================================== /Christer -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * Christer Johansson -- HTH -- * email: cj@aristotle.algonet.se * - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - >> World Wide Web: http://www.algonet.se/~cj/homepage.html << -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------- From: Chera Bekker Subject: Navy Strike? Hi all, Just read something about an upcoming flightsimm by Microprose called Navy Strike. It is supposed to be campaign orientated and you can fly the A-6, the F/A-18 and the F-22 (?). Does anyone have more information about this? Check Si Chera H.G. Bekker bekker@tn.utwente.nl Voice: +3153893107 ------------------------------- [[ End of digest Volume 2 : Issue 96 ]]
