The new group "alt.binaries.games.quake" has just been created.  This is
where binary files related to Quake should be posted.  The creation of
this group has been discussed in alt.config and the feedback has been
mostly positive.  Note that the original name (alt.binaries.quake) was
changed to alt.binaries.games.quake in order to have a better structure
under alt.binaries.*.

Here is the tagline for the group:
 alt.binaries.games.quake   Levels and utilities for the game Quake

And here is its charter:
 Any files related to Quake can be posted in alt.binaries.games.quake, as
 long as they do not include copyrighted material for which redistribution
 is not permitted.  Examples of files that can be posted: custom levels,
 graphics or sounds (PAK, WAD2 or BSP files), scripts in QuakeC, Quake
 editors and utilities.  General discussion about Quake or requests for
 files should not take place in this group.  It is recommended that all
 articles set followups to rec.games.computer.quake.misc or r.g.c.q.editing.

For those who don't understand the last sentence of the charter, it means
that you should add a line "Followup-To: rec.games.computer.quake.misc" to
the header of the articles (uuencoded binary files) that are posted in
alt.binaries.games.quake, in order to encourage people to post their replies
in the appropriate discussion group instead of a.b.g.q, which should only be
used for distributing files and not for discussion.  If your newsreader
doesn't let you add this kind of information to the header of your articles,
it would be a good idea to include a small comment in your articles,
reminding the readers that they should post their comments in r.g.c.q.* only.

This new group will hopefully help reducing the number of binary files
posted in discussion groups.  It is not intended to become the primary way
of distributing Quake files: they should be stored on the Quake ftp servers
(ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/quake/incoming/).  A newsgroup is useful for the
people who cannot use FTP or WWW, but don't forget that the files which are
posted in a binaries group will expire after a few days (or hours, depending 
on your site).  Besides, binaries groups are not available everywhere, so
this group should only be considered as a complement to the FTP sites.
