Crusades UV lmp collection
--------------------------------

Recorded by Drew "stx-Vile" DeVore, Esa "Espi" Repo, Chris "Ryback" Ratcliff,
Anthony Soto and Wim "Mole" Van Rie.

This is a collection of recorded demos (lmps) for all 9 levels of the
Crusades episode. All lmps were recorded on skill 4 (Ultra-Violence), ending
with at least 100% kills and 100% secrets (where possible).

Crusades is available at:
ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames/levels/doom/a-c/crusades.zip

To playback these demos, put them in your doom2 directory and type:

        doom -file crusades.wad -playdemo cr??-uv

where ?? is the episode/level number.

General Pack Comments
=====================

Drew "stx-Vile" Devore

This episode is a lasting classic, with a dark, moody atmosphere and excellent
gameplay which shows why Richard Wiles is one of my favorite level designers.
Each new level keeps players on their toes and every shot must count when ammo
becomes scarce. I' ve also seen some unique effects here, such as the shadowy
landscapes covered with darkened trees and terrain, giving the player that
DooMed feeling. I took E4M7 after seeing it mentioned on the forum and E4M8
soon after, since I always consider new boss situations especially fun to tackle. =)

Chris "Ryback" Ratcliff

Crusades is an unusually good Doom1 megawad with consistent theme, perfect attention
to detail, and some tough SG fights. The pack' s been kicking around for a bit, so
hopefully you' ll enjoy it.

No Comments. =D

Crusades is a good episode. I prefer Richard's "Slayer" though. Crusades has just
as good if not sometimes better layouts and detailing compared to Slayer. The
gameplay is just not as fun though in some maps because of tedious shotgun usage.
A bit more fustrating too because you face much more former humans in dark areas.
You get shot from some dark corner and the health borders on sufficient. I'd have
to agree with Drew also: I really don't like the new sounds either. Not sure if I
agree with the gothic textures either. Some fit well, others seems out of place.

If your looking to go straight for the good stuff I recommend Drew's e4m8 demo. I
admire his e4m7 demo also because I remember trying to record that map long ago
and it was nasty. Once again I have a small contribution. More so to stay active
and just have an evenings distraction then a concerted effort. My demos are meager
improvements to others preliminary efforts.

A nice pack, with some very good demos. The levels are, of course, next to perfect!
What'd you expect from someone like Richard Wiles?

Here is a quick table listing all lmps - detailed descriptions come later.

Descriptions

The descriptions were written by the team member who recorded the map.

E4M1 - Wim "Mole" Van Rie
--------------

A good opening level. Short and action packed. Those lost souls can be bitches,
especially while desperately trying to kill a Baron of Hell with a measely shotgun.

E4M2 - Anthony Soto
------------------

Well I mistakenly thought that I could improve Espi's previous 8:56 demo
substantially. When I was recording it became clear that was not the case.
Obviously Espi has come a ways since he first started doing DSF packs. A
solid map with a really eerie feel; though I was dying for some extra cells
particularly in the blue key room. Had a handful of demos end at the barrel
of the many shooters and once I got a VPO in the blue key room. Then I just
got burnt out and settled with the current demo I had. An average max demo
coming from me.

E4M3 - Anthony Soto
-------------------

This is one of my least favorite maps from the pack from the design perspective.
Just seems like one of those maps Richard did to complete the episode. It plays
smooth enough (easy on the lost souls tho Rich, sheesh). My first night with this
map yielded a 7:08. The temptation to get below 7 minutes proved too much to
resist. Spent an hour the next night w/o any exit. Just about to call it quits
and this one arrived. I wasn't suprised at the 40 seconds shaved off though because
I knew getting aggressive with the berserk would result in a nice improvement.

E4M4 Wim "Mole" Van Rie
-----------------

Quite a hard level, this one. If you aren't careful, you'll be out of ammo
before you know it. Otherwise, a nice map!

E4M5 - Esa "Espi" Repo
----------------------

This is a somewhat difficult map with cramped baron fights and crossfires.
And cramped baron crossfires. =D But still it's fun and rewarding to finish.
Might've been a wee bit faster if I would' ve noticed at the end that I had
2 rockets left. =D

E4M6 - Chris "Ryback" Ratcliff
----------------------

This is a fun map with some good architecture. A restricted amount of rocket and
cell ammo means you have to make your shots count. Map itself is quite easy, and
the Cyber at the end is a pushover.

E4M7 - Drew "stx-Vile" Devore
----------------

A small, well-connected level, missed shots can be unforgiving here. The jump to
the 100% armor makes the beginning easier, where the lead flies at you from many
unseen sarges. Barrels are also placed strategically here, put them to good use
when several demons happen to walk by. You won' t get any of the big weapons here,
so keep your shotgun aim steady. =)

E4M8 - Drew "stx-Vile" Devore
--------------------

This level is a bit longer than you' d first suspect. 2 Cyberdemons and a Mastermind
are the primary foes here, along with a small army of cacos and barons. I race past
the first cyber to the main arena for the BFG and 200H/200A, then gradually clean up
the remaining areas. I like the nod to Quake at the very end, perhaps hinting towards
one of Richard' s possible endeavors, plus the groups of troopers are fun to eradicate
with the extra rockets. =)

E4M9 - Esa "Espi" Repo
----------------------

Nice bright map for a change. It starts with very little ammo so the barons at
the first part can be a pain. In the end there is plenty of ammo to waste tho.

That's it - enjoy the lmps!
