Well here we are at last, I'm sure there's plenty of people who never thought this pack would be released! I didn't have much to do with the pack, only recorded two demos early on and then watched what everyone else was up to.

Fragport's an interesting megawad in that the design seems to focus on architecture rather than gameplay. Effort has been made to give the impression of a real place, with real functions - to wit, factory levels with cranes and rail tracks, city apartments with lounge, table and window views, bars, discos even. This being Doom, the effect is cruder than, say, Duke3d, but the design is rarely ugly.

You'd think this focus on real world architecture would mean the gameplay suffers, since the levels are crammed full of dead ends, directionless grids, rooms with nothing much in them. But it rarely matters because the difficulty level is so well judged, and there's always something to be gained from a full exploration of the level, be it health, a weapon, or seventeen Hell Knights :)

So anyway, watch all the good demos I didn't have anything to do with (eg, all the good demos), and we'll see you next demopack...

The first demo pack I've contributed to; hopefully not the last. Only one entry from me in this one - but it's for the best map (IMHO), map 4. Quality-wise my playing here is far from what I would've wanted, but a number of factors prevented me from improving it. Besides, since it's such an open and chaotic map it makes route optimizations and monster handling difficult. So consider yourself warned. ;-)

The other guys made a kick-ass job in making the other demos...I wish I had the skills to make maps this hard look so easy.

Especially recommended are Vince's runs and Cycloid's map 25 demo. But they're all quite good (as usual), so bring out the popcorn! Stephen Clark (The Ultimate Doomer) certainly outdid himself when making this mapset and now, at last, we have a demo pack for this fine megaWAD.

I would like to thank the other contributors for lots of high-quality entertainment, and Grazza especially for initiating the pack and encouraging "new" players to record alongside hardened veterans like Donce and Ryback. It was fun.

This pack was in the making for too long, but it's finally done. So congrats to Grazza who initiated the whole thing and The Ultimate Doomer, without him even Grazza's initiative work would have gone in vain (read: he created the megawad). I wish every megawad had its own demopack and maybe this will come true. For now, enjoy watching Fragport movie!

One of those maps that really challenged me to find a good route, despite the fact that the map itself is an arena, the main problem being that there just arent enough rockets for one to simply wade in and start shooting so herding and infighting are the key here even if their use is somewhat subtle. my only regret is that i didnt take out that last arachnotron on my way to the exit, could have saved quite a few seconds there.

Overall
-----------------------

What a shame, I never heard about Fragport until Grazza started a demopack for it.
I download it to see what it was and I was nicely surprised.
Maybe it's not an eye-candy wad, but the gameplay is fun and the very atmospheric.
I enjoyed playing it and watching other guys demos :)
I used 3 engines to record demos :
- doom2.exe v1.9 : The one I would have used if I had Win98, its mouse support fits me best.
It lags strangely under WinXP so I stopped using it.
- prBoom v2.2.4 : Usefull to keep demo compatibility with doom2.exe v1.9
Its mouse feels a bit weird. Also makes very annoying starts with
either strafe ON or a bad angle.
- Legacy v1.41 : I tried it once because I like its mouse support. It was a success.
Only one demo has been recorded this way.
When does Legacy get v1.9 compatibility ?

Demos
------------------------

Map02 - 6:38 - Recorded with PrBoom 2.2.4 -complevel 0

Here is a nice map, it takes place in some underground mines invested with demons.
It is not very crowded but a bit narrow at times, making dodging harded.
The demo itself is just average, I missed many SSG shots. I just wanted a sub 7:00 time :)

Map03 - 5:49 - Recorded with Legacy 1.41

The continuation of the mines...
I had a lot of 6:xx with prBoom and could not beat the 6 mins barrier.
So I decided to go for Legacy and magicaly got below 6 mins :)

Map10 - 9:24 - PrBoom 2.2.4 with -complevel 0

This map seems to be inspired from Ultimate Doom EP1 and EP2. One downside is that
it lack quite a bit of ammo, so you'll have to punch a bit.
This demo is prolly my 2nd exit, and I am lucky to get below 10 mins. I couldnt find
a way to do it fast ... I am not a crazy puncher :) I offered to give it away to
someone else but nobody wanted it :/

Map16 - 6:53 - Doom2.exe v1.9 with SB16 Emulation under Windows XP

A funny map filled with a lot of monsters ... all that I like :)
The doom2.exe lag under XP doesn't help but playing this map is always funny.
The demo itself sucks a bit, just wanted a sub 7:00. I lose a lot of time looking around...
yes, I often missed monsters.

Map19 - 6:18 - PrBoom 2.2.4 with -complevel 0

Very nice map, very fun to play besides the nasty late teleporting monsters.
Yeah, just after getting the blue key a bunch of monsters teleport... and
sometimes some of them teleport "very" late... causing a 99% kills.
Besides that the map has plenty of ammo, a cyber and a spider mastermind.
This time they did not fight each other ... too bad. The demo is so-so.
Under 6 mins would a cool time.

Map26 - 1:37 - PrBoom 2.2.4 with -complevel 0

A little maze with a couple monsters, 3 keys and 3 switches requiring the keys.
Not easy to figure out a route there... no way to know if the route is good
or not. I tried several one and I have been happy with this one :)
The map also contain a soulsphere and a blue armor, but it's a waste of time.

Map27 - 1:09 - PrBoom 2.2.4 with -complevel 0

Same as map26 with only 9 arch viles, a cyberdemon and a BFG. BFG is waaaaayyyy
faster than rockets or plasma. Still hard to figure out a route but I am sure that
below 1 min is possible.

Map29 - 1:05 - Doom2.exe v1.9 with SB16 Emulation under Windows XP

The maze is very hard to learn by heart, I got lost sometimes :)
It is not my best run for the maze but I did the switches faster than usual.

Map30 - 4:26 - Doom2.exe v1.9 with SB16 Emulation under Windows XP

Begins with same maze as map29 but you start on the other side :)
200/200 and full ammo/weapons makes the map a no-brainer, rockets and BFG mostly :)
